Woodchucks... Meet Chucky...
« on: April 19, 2015, 04:06:55 AM »
I took the Ruger 327 (Chucky) out with me on my walk-a-'bout yesterday morning. Happened on three woodchucks. Final score woodchucks 1, Dutch & Chucky 2. 1 taken at 25 yards the other at 40 both head shots. The one that got away was a running shot. More practice is required.  @--0--0121

Note to self: Don't shoot 'em until completely out of their hole. Makes recovery a whole lot easier. I hate sticking my arm down their hole on blind faith.

that's a lot of chucks. why so many?

I made a 92 yard shot w/ my old octagon .22 on a chuck at the cabin. he was messing up my food plot. I heard the whoop at impact but didn't go to check it out until my work was done. walk up to the holes w/ my dad and sure enough he was in the hole. 'ol dad didn't hesitate to poke me and yell as I put my hand down the hole. YES I JUMPED. so, I agree. wail out until they get out of the hole to shoot. perfect head shot

Our Chucks aren't out yet "too cold"  --099-780 but when they do come around, a lead pill to the cranium works every time.

Congrats, DH.  Last sunday afternoon, I spotted one rooting around in our compost pile.  Got the ole .22 out, took at shot at it, and missed!  The chuck looked around, and I took another shot, missed again!  I guess I need to check the scope out next calm day.  Very seldom do I miss like that.

Congrats Dutch!  A 40 yard head shot on a runnin' chuck is something to brag about indeed.   I spent a lot of time as a kid hunting groundhogs on my grandfather's place and for a few of the neighbors - don't see many around here these days, I suspect because of all the 'yotes, but maybe for other reasons.  Really miss that.

My grandfather always put in a huge garden, and always had groundhogs causing him grief.  He also ran a barbershop in his basement (until he passed away a few days short of his 90th birthday).   I'd sit up in his bedroom window overlooking one end of the garden, with either my .410 or a .22 and wait for them to show up.  One day I'm up there with my .410 and momma chuck comes out to snack on the broccoli plant at about 25 yds.  Shotgun goes bang, groundhog goes belly up, and I go downstairs through the barbershop to head out & pick it up - - Grandpa was in the middle of shaving this guy with a straight razor at the time, said we'd have to put a new rule in place that I can't shoot when he has a razor open - the customer's nose was still attached, but I think it was dripping a bit.    ##$%#13

Oh yeah, he was back.  Hard to find $2.50 haircuts and good storytelling like that anywhere else.  He did tend to ask if there was going to be any shooting going on though when Grandpa would reach for the razor.
