Florida panhandle rut still going strong!
« on: February 08, 2015, 10:10:08 PM »
First let me admit I'm not a trophy hunter, love a buck with a good rack, but on our small farm I'm a meat hunter.  If he's legal, I'll try to kill him 'cause we love venison.  We have 80 acres, surrounded by neighbors that are not all what we might call ethical hunters, so letting a small legal buck walk is a wasted deer, when he jumps the fence someone else will take a crack at him :(.
That being said, I killed a 3 point Friday afternoon that was runnin' does in the Rye patch.  Saturday evening there was a spike with big bases runnin' the does in the same food plot and in and out of some planted pines.  Most of my hunting acquaintances are reporting bucks runnin' does all over the woods.
Zone D in Florida is from Tallahassee west, season runs through March 1, the last week being restricted to primitive weapons.
Several years back Florida adjusted season dates to coincide with the rut dates, earlier most of the rut occurred after the season closed.  (side note: the rut in the Everglades is in late summer, they start hunting there in August and it progresses north and west up the state.)
Here's a picture of Friday afternoon hunt, inside the red circle is a white belly while 2 does ran a short distance and stopped to see what happened to Romeo.

Nice looking piece of property, PA should adjust their hunting around the rut for everyone too and not just the archery hunters. I am an archery hunter also but it would be nice for everyone to get to hunt the rut.

The rut is still goin' strong!  Here's a Florida Panhandle buck with an unusual rack.  One of my friends killed this buck Sunday afternoon.  Shot him with a 270, good hit, lots of blood, ran a couple hundred yards.  Friend said he could smell the buck before he could see him at the end of the blood trail.  He was chasin' a doe when he ran into the 270 round.

Sat for a couple of hours this afternoon and had a big lanky spike runnin' does in the food plot, even with the wind blowin' about 20 mph.

This is the last week of rifle season, then one week of M/L, ends March 1.

He is an odd looking one.  He even looks stinky!  Lol
It's crazy how different he hunting is in different parts.  Out rut has been over for 2 months.

Here it is almost a year later, and the deer are still ruttin' here in the panhandle of Florida during January and Feruary.  I know of at least 6 bucks killed in the last 2 weeks.
One buck, a 10 pt. was killed by one of our neighbors, it was his 2nd deer.  A very special man had taken this 45 year old neighbor and gave him the opportunity he had been wanting for several years.
The special thing about this, is the neighbor has Downs syndrome!  He really wanted to go deer hunting and one of his friends took the time and allowed it to happen.  They hunted from a pop up blind as the neighbor is a little uncomfortable climbing into a stand.  Earlier in the season he was able to kill a doe.
Last Sunday evening it came together and he killed a 10 point.  If I can get a picture I will post it.
Been processing my deer from the 21st and had another one given to me on Friday.  Need to get them finished up before I try and get back in the stand.  It takes me a day or so to process one, today I boned out the shoulders, separating the good for ground venison and good for sausage into 2 piles.  Also turned the 4 back straps into boneless venison chops and vacuumed packed them.
Here is a couple of pictures of the processing and also a 6 point that is hanging around.
