Sometimes you win...
« on: November 19, 2014, 10:59:44 AM »
...sometimes you loose. Going through my trail cam pictures I found this one. My buddy shot a nice 7 pointer on this morning and I almost hunted this stand location. But I had placed a climber in another location I had found the day before and elected to hunt it instead. Oh well that why it's called hunting.

I agree with Yari, those dark racks are really nice.  Any of you know what makes some dark & some almost pure white?  I've noticed that they all tend to get lighter as the winter progresses, but what makes some of them such a dark brown to start with?

Nice buck and keep at 'em. One has your name on the rack! Like I said before, multiple stands with cameras is not always a good idea! lol

So true but I hunt the wind and have several different locations to hunt for that reason. I've seen several small bucks at that stand but only had him on camera at night until this picture.

I think it's a combination of blood stain from the velvet, and the species of tree they rub.  The sap of some trees will make their racks much darker than other species.  As fall turns into winter, thy quit rubbing and their racks get lighter.  At the same time, some racks seem to stay darker than others, so genetics may play a role also.
