That is no fun. I have been there and did that more times than I like to admit. Keep your chin up and redeem yourself.

I have nothing to say to you that will make you feel any better, but I hope you get another chance at him.

Don't worry same thing happened to me last year.  Had a 4.5 year old 7 pointer come in and I shot over his back on Friday, shot him directly in the shoulder bone only getting a few inches of penetration Saturday, Sunday went out looking and saw him bedded with a doe, and during gun season a friend of mine shot him about 4 miles away with a club foot on the opposite side.  He was still chasing does in the field when he got shot.  You could see the rage cut on his shoulder blade in the skin! They are tough animals and he will be back to running does in no time!

I spoke with the owner of the neighboring property last week and gained permission to look on his land.  My wife and I went up Saturday and found what was left of the buck in tall weeds on the far side of a pasture.  The coyotes and vultures ate good last week.  It added even more disappointment to the situation because I really thought and hoped he would heal up.  Apparently the shot caught more than just shoulder blade.  I tagged him and checked him in online and am done buck hunting for the year.  I may take a doe if our sons don't get anything, but I'll only be shooting bucks with the camera.

I know a few that probably would never have tagged it.   Well done Sir, as disappointing as it is.

that's a dandy. how far did he go after you lost his track? were you able to figure out the arrow path or was it too messed up?

glad you were able to have closure. did you put a tape measure to it?

Sad story, but you are a true sportsman and I'm proud to say that I know you. I'm glad that you were able to at least recover the antlers. They aren't much for table fare but a good conversation piece of another memorable hunt.

We found him about 200 yards past the last blood spot.  The arrow was stuck in the ground where he had laid down or fallen.  The broadhead was missing, it looks like it unscrewed.  I looked for it but couldn't find it anywhere, and I assume coyotes drug off the leg in question because it was missing.  No I haven't measured and probably won't for a while.  I boiled the meat off the skull last night.  There's still a little left to clean up but I won't be able to get back to it until this weekend at the earliest.  I'll post an updated pic after it's all cleaned up.

Here's the last update.  Boiled, bleached, and hanging in the living room.
