Things are looking up here
« on: October 05, 2014, 08:02:58 PM »
Our bow opener was Oct 1, but this afternoon was my first opportunity to get out.  In the last 2-3 years we've seen a tremendous decline in the population, believed to be primarily a result of a high rate of EHD infections.  Tonight I took my climber and set up in a place where I had a good vantage point, was more interested in seeing where things were moving than getting a shot.  Saw a total of 5, and actually could have taken a little button buck and a spike at about 15 yards but they need to grow up first.  Don't think I had that much action in one sitting all of last year, so perhaps things have rebounded a bit.  Let's hope so.  Freezer is empty, but hopefully not for long!

Just seeing deer makes it much more interesting.  Sitting there for hour after hour, not seeing any movement makes for a boring time.  Last year, on one day, I saw 9 bucks out behind my house.  I figure that particular date was the peak of the rut, last year it was late, around here most often it takes place during the first two weeks in November.  I didn't get a buck that day, but my two guests did.

It's not always about the harvest...sounds like a great evening in the stand. I'm always happy to just see deer best of luck this season!

I don't mind not getting a shot, but it is much nicer if you just get to see some.

So true.  I had two does playing in front of me on Sunday.  I could have shot either but I decided to just sit and watch.  They were the first deer I'd seen this season and was totally amused watching them.  Sometime I just like to sit and see how much I can move, or how much noise I can make without alerting them.  Funny how some things that seem so loud in the stand fall on deaf ears where the next time the slightest of sounds send them running.

Yep, they certainly seem to have a way to sense when you're just watching for entertainment vs. considering a shot.
