Another great morning ...
« on: May 12, 2013, 08:26:06 AM »
in the turkey woods...well a few since I shot the jake at camp...went back down to camp a few days later and worked 2 Toms for 2 1/2 hours...alas I finally got him up out of the gully...his fan was beautiful...but he peeked over the ridge and walked away...the other never came into view....Too many road hunters...know the place is a camp....Had fun though...

Today I went to an open brush blind behind the house...Oh my a tad chilly out there with a very stiff breeze.....38 degrees......at 6am I had a hen come off the hill through our woods walk past me feeding and down hill...I assume to meet up with the Toms down there...at 7 I heard the fly downs up hill from me and decided to do a couple of purrs....next thing I know I hear wings flapping and a hen  literally landed in my lap! ##$%#12[/i]...well so close her left wing laid across my gun barrel!...LOL ...Now I know what that strange whoo sound behind me was...I'll add that to my list of turkey sounds for quiet birds...she had been roosted 15ft behind me...Well after the initial cackle upon landing she stayed quiet...fed on beetles and then she went the same route as the first bird...Lots of light hen sounds but nothing after that....... my feet were freezing so came in at 9a.m....Fun morning..and did you know that they chew up beetles when eating...crunch crunch crunch...she was so close I actually saw it going down her throat :)

That's a great morning in the turkey woods, and a little educational also. It's not always the kill that keeps us going back to the woods.

Thanks for the adventure.

Sounds like a fun time.  I had a close encounter with a hen this morning too...but definitely not that close!  I called her into less than 10 yards.  She eyed up my decoys pretty hard for about a minute then walked off.  No gobbles heard by me today either...but you're right about chilly and windy this morning!

That sounds like an awesome morning! You don't see those kind of things on a chair in front of a computer screen! No offense intended there, you know what I'm talking about! Great story!
