My Biggest Deer (Woods Walker's Deer)
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:49:50 PM »
2005. Second half of the Illinois firearm deer season. The farm I hunt is in the bluffs overlooking the Illinois River by Meredosia. I was stillhunting along the bluff in the morning, when I caught movement about 40 yards away. It was several does who were being followed by this guy.  When he stepped into an opening I shot him. He never knew what hit him.  He scored 170" typical, and with non-typical scoring he was 184.
I use a A-Bolt 12 gauge slug gun mounted with a Leupold 1.5X5 and Winchester Partition Gold sabots in the chamber.

Thank you all!  That was some year for me. In the first half of the season 2 weeks before, I had killed a 145" typical not too far from there at 35 yards hunting the same way.

That deer would have been a great deer in any season but because of the one I later shot in the photo he kind of got kind short shifted!

But I'll take "problems" like those anytime!

Having deer like this to hunt is one of the few good things about living in Illinois.

What a slob buck. Very nice. You don't hunt to terribly far from my place. About 35 minutes away.

I know where you're at, great area! We've got some dandies, do we not?  "Slob" bucks and felonious governors seems to be our stock in trade.

One sidenote about the hunt where I killed that deer....that was also the last hunt I ever had with my mentor who died last spring. If you could have seen the look in his eyes and the smile on his face when he saw that deer on the ground you'd have thought he killed it, and in a lot of ways he did, because the skills I have and the opportunity that first started my life path as a hunter all came from him.   You could say that I have TWO "trophies" from that hunt.
