ag lime vs pelitized lime.
« on: August 17, 2012, 05:59:54 PM »
this and old story , but what is cheaper have our aglime brought in by truck  or should we just buy bagged dolomite  lime.  i am hearing the the pulverized ag lime could be over done and will blow away and not change the pH as well. so will it be better to use bagged dolomite lime. "need experts here please".  i am hearing the pulverized limes does not last as long as dolomite.  help trying to save some money.

ag lime will be cheaper and last longer that the pellatized lime. Down here ag lime is about $45 a ton where pellatized lime is about $250 a ton. In either case, the lime needs to be disked into the soil good, unless your putting over the top of an existing food plot, then I would try to plan to do it right before a rain, so that it gets washed into the soil.

Ag lime is always cheaper around here in VA too.  My local Ag supply is not carrying "fast acting lime".  It is powdered and is suppose to start changing the PH as soon as it hits the ground and they claim it lasts as long as regular ag lime.  It also needs worked n as soon as it is spread.  This product runs a little more than ag lime but much less than bagged.

Pelletized lime is manufactured by granulating finely ground agricultural lime. It can contain different mineral properties -- being either calcitic or dolomitic -- depending on the original limestone's nature. A cementing agent, called lignosulfonate, is introduced into the granulated lime so that it takes the form of pellets. Other binding agents such as cane molasses, brewex and molex may be used instead of lignosulfonate, as they are more cost-effective. Lignosulfonate, however, is the most effective cementing agent.

You get less total lime per bag but easier to spread.  If you are doing a small area and would be hard to get a delivery truck there, it would make sense.

I am picking up a few bags from Tractor Supply today, on sale for $3 per 40 lb bag.

I can buy Ag-lime here at $1.44 per bag if I buy in 1 ton lots which I do. You can not get heavy equipment where I need the lime so bags are the way to go

That line about pulverized lime not lasting as long is bogus.  That is a marketing scheme by the makers of pelletized lime.  Pulverized is actually the best way to go as lime works Particle of lime to Particle of Dirt.  by pulverizing the lime, it becomes easier to attach individual particles.  Pulverized costs a little more for the increased processing.
