Black Squirells return!
« on: June 11, 2012, 01:12:12 PM »
I have not seen a black squirell for I'd bet 20 years. Until today! I saw 3 of them while hauling bails back from back hayfield. They are about the same size as the red ones but coal black. Kinda look like a mini-fisher really cool. I'll go back out with camera and see if I can get them to pose for me. If they cooperate I'll post pics later.

We use to see black phase grey squirells in western Massachusetts when we lived there. They were neat to see

When I lived in Battle Creek, I used to see them all the time.  Where I live now, I hardly ever see a squirrel, and I live out in the country!  I only have two oak trees in my property.

When I spent some time working in Northern Indiana a few yrs back....I believe it was Elk Hart....that we got to seeing a  bunch of black squirrels which I had not ever seen....they were huge....really made the power lines bow and shake when they ran them. Here in Ky...I have had one squirrel That I had seen for 2yrs...up until this last gun season that had a black face and some more black on his back.

That's interesting!  Around here, all the black squirrels I have seen are smaller than the red fox squirrels.  Those can get quite bit, especially if they live at a suburban park, etc.  There are quite a few oak trees at the Capital grounds in Lansing, MI.  The fox squirrels there were huge!

Well they were a bit bashful or camera shy. The black squirells around here are small like our red ones. They each are just a little bigger than a chipmunk. They each have ear tufts about 1/2 long above the ear tips. Their tails are nearly as big as their bodies. The grey's here are a little larger but not a big as the brown's down south and the rex fox squirells you have mentioned would look like giants compared to these. You'd be hard pressed to find a black or red than weighs 2 pounds here. I'll continue to "shutter" hunt until I get one, as time permits.

I got to get back after them yotes they have had enough free time.

my son caught a black squirrel in a live trap a few days ago.  He had set the trap, 'cause something was getting into his garden.  I told him just to bring it out to my place and release it.  I have seen it a couple of times since the release, but I imagine it has already moved out from our area.

I have not seen any black phase gray squirrels around my part of Virginia but I have shot a couple almost white ones.
