« on: June 11, 2012, 05:13:38 AM »
Have you ever had problems with Tree Rats eat everything around the house that is Plastic? I have had feeders destroyed, fender and cup holder on my riding mower eaten off. then last week had one eat the handle off my Gas can why? That squirrel needs help so as soon as I get back from Summer Blast I am going to seek treatment for my plastic eating squirrel...

Possum,

Squirrels are classified as rodents and have well-developed jaw muscles and chisel-like front teeth that can chew through just about anything. These front teeth are kept sharp by gnawing on hard objects such as woody plant materials, seeds, and nuts. Since rodents' front teeth grow constantly, they must be filed down, or they will grow to the point where the animal cannot eat, and starvation will result.
You could try using taste repellents like capsaicin (a hot pepper spray) on the plastic items. There are sticky substances registered for use with squirrels, but they are messy to use.
I put wire mesh over my feeder lid/top were they chewed on the top edge.  The cats catch the ones around the yard.  I am not a cat person but from growing up on a farm, they are useful for rodents!!!

I have a squirrel cookout myself!!!     @--0--0125     ##$%#111

They are bad about that. I have a squirrel killing spree twice a year around the house and the neighbor's barn cat keeps the rest at bay.

I have had them eat parts of the plumbing vents on top of my roof, to the point it started leaking into the house. They also eat up my bird feeders. They really seem to love my pull up ropes and bungees on my tree stands too.

A hot pepper spray on plastic items work well, but can be messy to use

I have a friend who keeps shelled corn for the deer in one of those blue 55 gal plastic drums.  He told me squirrels chewed through the side of the drum, to get to the corn.  that plastic is 1/4" thick!

I can personally attest to the fact that they have some sharp little teeth. Long time ago I shot one thought it was dead went to pick it up and the thing bit me. Hurt like the dickens
