Got my first turkey
« on: April 25, 2012, 10:07:06 PM »
Indiana turkey season opened today. I was in my blind at 5:30a.m. and sat until 1:00p.m. and only  seen two hens, but heard a gobbler at 10:00a.m. and then again at noon. So I decided to try to put a move on him and went to the other side of the woods. He would gobble but would never show himself, just like last weekend during the youth season.

Went home to get stuff ready for my son and me to go out once he got home from school. At 3:45p.m my son and I was driving back to the woods and he looks at me and says “Dad, if a tom comes into range I want you to shoot him.” I told him he gets first crack at the toms, but he said “I already got one and you haven’t.” (I almost started to cry, well at least tear up a bit since he is only 10yrs. Old.)

I told him that was fine I would be happier to watch him shoot his second bird anyway.
We get into the blind and it starts raining and raining and raining. He wanted to go home so I called the wife to come pick him up, which she did. Since we still had more than an hour to hunt I decided to stay out, but to check another location.
Got moved around and found three red heads and a hen out in the field. I watched them and made a good guess where they would be going and got set up.  Lucky me I guessed right and they walked right to me. I could see the first bird was a hen and then a jake. I thought the third bird had a five inch beard so I was waiting for him.

Once he got into good view I seen his beard was much longer. Him and the last jake walked in and I shot the biggest one which ended up having a 10 inch beard and 1 inch spurs.

Now for the bad, I was going to do a full body mount, but once I got to the tom I must off been shooting for his beard because I knocked EVERY feather out of his chest. LOL Guess I just got turkey fever.

Called the wife to come get me and my son came along to get in on the photos and tell me great job and he was very happy that I finally got one.

Thanks everyone, I got the tom cleaned last night and going to have some friends over once the weather turns nice and have a turkey dinner. Last year my son got his first turkey and we grilled him and it was the best. Can't wait.

Also I have already dropped him off at my taxidermy to have a fan mount done. He did my sons last year and I was very happy with his work.
