Opening day in VA
« on: April 17, 2012, 01:52:31 PM »
Springhen (Nikki) and I went hunting on the opener last weekend and had an eventful day.  we went to a spot I knew would produce but we got out a little later than we wanted to.  We got to the field and saw that someone else in my club had also found that spot to produce!  We turned around and went to a secondary spot I had found and heard some birds gobbling.  I got us as close as I thought we could and we sat down.  Put out some decoys and waited a little while.  I called a few times and the birds answered us right away!  I could hear other hunters in the woods calling but I thought since I had them answering me they would come to us!  about 1000 we heard the birds gobble one last time and about 15 minutes later we heard a loud gun shot about 150 yards across the swamp...shucks...we packed up and went to breakfast!  We are going out this weekend to get after them again and we will get in the woods a little sooner in the spot I wanted to go to first! Hopefully Nikki and I will be able to put some pics up of our first bird!!!

It's happen to me before. Be careful out there during this time of year. Stay after them and best of luck.

Good luck next trip. Hunting this time of year can get crowded, hang in there.

that's a bummer, when you work a bird, and some stranger ends up with it.  Keep after them, you'll get one.
