Opening Day in Virginia
« on: April 15, 2012, 07:25:47 AM »
Well, set up on two nice Tom's I put to bed on Friday night.  I saw them fly up in a big old oak about 300 yards from the neighboring property and saw hens in a tree about the same distance behind the Tom's.  I was set up about 70 yards from the "boys" between them and the hens and had two hen decoys out about 20 minutes before daylight.....

Well the the best laid plans............They gobbled n answer to my calling from the roots and then the hens flew down, 400 yards onto the neighboring property!!!!!!  The boys followed.........I called and they puffed all up and answered several times.  Both took a few steps toward my decoys, showed off for about 15 minutes then the "real thing" henned started to talk to them and I was forgotten.  Those birds answered me for over a half hour and I watch them travel all over the neighboring field.  A couple times they moved toward me like they were going to head back to the two girls who were not coming with the rest of them But a-lass, they did not.....

Have to work all week so I will be back after them on Saturday.  Only good thing is no one hunts any of the surrounding farms to the east south or north.  There is a very large subdivision of houses to the west.

ALL IN ALL to me this was a great hunt, and first Saturday in May I can go ater those boys all day if one does not fall before.

You didn't get a bird, but you got a good story.  Maybe next time.
