Shed Hunting With Newt
« on: March 25, 2012, 07:31:34 PM »
Not that Newt.  I went shed hunting with Newt the dog.  We got a late start this year and the vegetation was already knee deep in the good areas.  Without Newt we would have been skunked as it is impossible to see them but he can smell them.  In about 4 hours he found 8 sheds including 3 matched sets and a small buck skull.  I think he would have found more but we were hunting in the wrong areas.  When we finally got in him a good area he found all 8 sheds in about 45 minutes.

Very impressive!  I don't suppose you would loan him out? @--0--0105

That is great, I have just gotten the materials and I am going to start training my lab to do this.  She is a heck of a waterfowl dog and I hope to give her something to do in the off season!!

Newt is actually my friends dog so I loaning him out might be difficult.  Newt's biggest problem is he gets lazy and needs to be worked more to keep him in shape and interested.  If you were closer he probably would loan him out just to keep Newt on his game.  It is very neat watching him work especially when he catches a scent. He even found a matching 13 pt set that were both buried in the mud at the edge of a pond but somehow he could still smell them.

when I started reading this post, the first thought that came to mind was "Gee, can I borrow the dog? but I see I'll have to wait in line.  I have found a few sheds but they are far and few between.  Finding a nice matched set would be awesome.
