From my NY DEC email is this

Report Deer Found Sick or Dead from Unknown Causes

After a recent discovery of an unusual illness in a white-tailed deer in Warren County, DEC is asking anyone who sees deer that are acting abnormally or are found dead from unknown causes to report it to the nearest DEC regional office, an Environmental Conservation Officer, or a Forest Ranger. More details http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/79622.html are available in DEC's press release online.

The article is well worth reading, they do not seem to know just is causing the deaths

That sounds like the same report we got here in Michigan for CWD.  I sure hope you don't see reports of deer dying in that area.  If they find CWD they will almost eliminate the herd for miles around that area.  I sure hope I am wrong.

This is part of what is posted about the bacterial disease found......I have to wonder if this has actually been around much longer....the pic was taken several years ago...I assumed it was due to a car collision he had survived...perhaps not ....problem is ...with this being winter...any deer that would dye or become ill would be claimed in entirety with in days by yotes...never having been seen ill...ppl aren't out in the woods as much especially in these high winds and blowing snow....

--- Quote ---"One of the ways that DEC monitors the health of New York's deer herd is by performing post-mortem examinations to determine the cause of the illness or death," said Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources Kathleen Moser. "We depend on information provided by people who are outdoors to tell us when they see something that does not look right to them."

Recently, DEC identified an uncommon bacterial disease in a deer from Warren County. This bacterial disease does not affect humans. However, DEC is seeking additional information to determine the prevalence of this disease in the deer herd and is responding to reports of deer that are acting abnormally. Deer with this bacterial disease may have a swollen head, neck or brisket. They also may exhibit excessive drooling, nasal discharge or respiratory distress. To aid in this investigation, DEC would also like to examine any deer that are found dead from unknown causes.

People should not handle or eat any deer that appears sick or acts abnormally. Sightings of sick, dying or dead deer should be reported to the nearest DEC regional office or an Environmental Conservation Officer or Forest Ranger.

To locate your nearest DEC office, please visit the DEC's website.

Man that looks terrible.    Always hate to hear of this kind of thing.     Nature can be pretty cruel and harsh sometimes.   Hope they get it under control fast.    Hope it's not something "man-made".
