Is there any intrest on me doing this? UPDATE 2-15-12
« on: January 03, 2012, 12:41:46 PM »
I have been seeing alot of post lately about eropean skull mounts. I see alot of people boiling thier skulls, and someone actually used bleach, this is not a good thing to do at all. I am a part time taxidermist and do them pretty regular. If there is enough intrest from here, I can get started on a step by step tutorial with detailed pics of the complete process I use (If the mods will allow the pics). So how about it?

I do 30 to 50 a season and if it's not a good way (boiling)  I for sure want to hear what you got, even if you don't do it here please send me a PM and I will give you my email

lets do it but please put in the title a warning like "Graphic Images of deer skulls" along with the actual title. Also, I have been wanting to bring back the taxidermy board so this was a good excuse. Please put it in there...

Thanks

High heat, such as boiling will damage the bone, especially all the little bitty bones in the nasal cavity. If you do use the boiling method, it is best to actually "simmer" not "boil". The lower the temperature, the better.

What about this deal.... though it's physically impossible to get all mine done, but I have heard that some leave it in water for a while and let the flesh "rot" away....

I don't see this being a good method because the bones soften way to much and the whole skull is literally loose when it's actually done!

If you can, don't just put the steps you use to do a euro mount, but also include the do's and don't's of other methods too, if you don't mind,  like tell why you shouldn't do this or that....   That would be a big help,

Thanks!!!!!!!!

I would be very interested in learning how to do it. I have a couple of 9 point deer skulls I could practice on.
I would suggest you start the topic and see how it goes. For anyone interested you could always communicate via PM's.

I use the maceration method, where the flesh "rots" away, with no issues. But I have a container setup with aquarium heaters to keep water temp between 90 and 100 degrees, promotes quick bacteria growth which speeds up the process. Dont get me wrong, you can great results with a pot and burner, but it is recommended to "simmer" rather than "boil", and that is where the confusion comes in. Also when simmering or boiling, you have to be very carefull the antlers do not touch in the water, because they will discolor.

Please do, my father in law just started doing ours last year, and I know he boils and bleaches, and you know the story of old dogs and new tricks, I would love a step by step from someone who knows the right and wrong ways, and reasons for both.
