Hunt Master's Journal
« on: October 15, 2011, 12:38:05 PM »
Lockon to the west of #35 in the road below the big ladder stand. Hardwood bottom.

East wind - 4 mph   low of 51 degrees  high around 80.
Opening day of the Alabama bow season. Acorns dropping like rain! Didnt see any deer until after 9 am. Then I saw a spike and a young 8 point. I decided to let the 8 walk and shortly after a nice shooter buck came into range. I had to rush the shot a bit and it looks like the shot went a little too far back. We jumped him twice and are now letting him lie for a few more hours before going back after him. While looking for my arrow, I had the biggest buck of my life walk within 50 yards of me heading straight at me. and my bow was sitting on the ground 40 yards away... just my luck..

Note:  great place to squirrel hunt in Feb

We jumped the buck again that afternoon so we decided to let him lay overnight. With 90+ temps, we knew this would ruin the chances of getting any meat off of him if we did find him but we didnt feel like we needed to keep jumping him. We went back Sunday morning after the morning hunt and looked for hours. No luck. We had lost all signs of blood. I went back later that afternoon and still no luck. I was staying over at camp to hunt Monday morning and decided to go look for him one more time after the Monday morning hunt. I found him. He had double back on his trail and was circling back to where he had originally come from before I shot him. My shot had been perfect left and right. Right behind the shoulder. However, my shot was low and he had been quartering to me more than I thought. The arrow went in right behind the left shoulder, very low, and exited just in front of the righ hind quarter. Missed the heart by inches and ran the arrow though the gut. No meat but I did save the rack...  9 point

Lessons learned....

Lockon to the west of #35 in the road below the big ladder stand. Hardwood bottom. (same stand I shot the 9 point from)

no wind    low of 32 degrees  high around 75.

Beautiful morning but no activity except a million squirrels. Jumped two bedded deer on the way out.

Sat on the ground next to a hardwood bottom to the south of #40 halfway down the road on the left.

North wind - 4 mph   low of 36 degrees  high around 78.

Since we have been seeing nothing in the mornings lately, I decided to go in at 8 am and sit until 1 PM hoping they are moving mid day.

didnt see anything....
