what to expect with switchgrass first year
« on: July 09, 2008, 08:27:55 PM »
last year I disked an area, sprayed roundup 3 times, limed pellitized lime 1 ton per acer, frost seeded switchgrass on 18 inches of snow in march of this year. last weekend I sprayed with 1 oz per gallon of trimec  2-4-d with surfactant. am I on the right track? see some grass but do not know if it is switchgrass or something else, what does it look like and what can I expect to happen. soil is ok in some spots sandy loam and just plain sandy in another, in the sandy area little to no growth, in the better soil thick growth weeds and grass. live in michigan thumb.

I'd get with your local county extension office.  They are the duty experts on the local vegitation and should be able to provide you with some sound guidance.

I hear you tax2death. I have put in over 120 hours in the last 8 weeks & I love it! Switch Grass is a pain to establish, but it's great stuff once it gets going. It sounds like you have done pretty good so far. I hope you got a soil test. If not, get one for establishing Switch Grass to make sure you are not deficient in anything that could cause a failure. Also realize that it is common to take a couple years to see if you are successfull. Sometimes three. Your county extension office should be able to provide you with pictures at various growth stages or at least confirm what is coming up is indeed Switch Grass. They may even know of someone in the area that has a stand along a road you could drive up to and see for yourself. You can also go here http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=PAVI2&photoID=pavi2_010_avp.tif to see pictures and learn more. What variety did you plant? I really like the Cave-In-Rock.

Our club has 5 work weekends per year, and I probably go another 5 weekends on my own. It's a labor of love.
