the one that DIDN"T get away
« on: May 29, 2011, 09:34:52 AM »
My nephew shot this bird yesterday morning, while him and my Dad were, for the last time of the season, hunting this particular bird again. The rain held off, which gave them the green light to set up well before daylight. It was the perfect set up. After weeks of trial and error, the flock finally showed a weakness. And once my Dad figured it out, he capitalized. It was a perfect ambush. No calling was needed. All they had to do was sit tight and wait for him to pop his head up at 15 yards. I'm so proud of him. He showed great patience with this one. His patience, coupled with diligence, payed off in the end. They hunted this bird all season. It seemed like when it wasn't raining, he was nowhere to be found. It's hard to hunt a turkey that won't gobble and isn't interested, but obviously not impossible. They were going to get him mounted, but there were just too many feathers lost in the final struggle for life, plus all the breast feathers gone from breeding. His beard is 11 3/8" and his spurs are a smidge shy of 1 1/4",,,they were broke off or they they would have been over 1 1/4" CONGRATULATIONS AUSTIN and THANK YOU DAD FOR BEING HIS HUNTING MENTOR/PARTNER/FRIEND.
