BACK FROM PA
« on: May 19, 2011, 09:44:35 AM »
Well I'm back from my Pa turkey hunt-- Weather sucked for the most part rain most of the time I was there. We got a break Monday afternoon with a little sun. We had hunted in the morning no gobbles went back at 4pm and I had not even got set down on my pad  when he gobbled about 150 yds away!! I called to him he answered!! I had my decoy on the edge of the plowed field because the turkeys were working that field eating worms that came to the top after the rain-- great set up, I have killed a turkey there every year for the last 6 years. So I sat tight and didn't call and he didn't gobble so at 4:20 I purred and he gobbled and was closer than before he had cut the distance in half! I shut up again and waited, no gobble I purr again at 4:45 GOBBLE! very close- I can't see into the field to my left where it cuts around behind me but I know he's walking up the edge right to my set up, I look left and behind nothing look back and there is a hen walking by my decoy from left to right so I just know that gobbler is following her right? So I have the gun up head down waiting for him to step in the open-- I have not heard him gobble for 15 mins but I know he's there-- A crow flys over and calls GOBBLE!!! blows my hat off from right behind me!! I don't move I am glued to the gun and the tree can't look I'll bust him for sure-- I sat there for 30 mins before I slowly turned to look for him Nothing he's gone he never came by me because I could see to my right he must have went over the hill or back the way he came. He had just walked the wood line never out in the field until he was right behind me. I called and he never answered. I just sat there catching my breath look up and here come a jake from my right walks almost to the decoy stops at 15 yards head up BOOM!!! MISS!!! he runs up the hill and my buddy shoots him 15 mins later. So no turkey and rain for 5 days but man I had FUN!!!

Great story, Bluetoe!  Close, but no cigar-- been there, done that!   Funny how things work sometimes.  Still sounded like a fun hunt, though.   You'll get 'em next time.

We all like to score, but I love your statement "I had fun".  That is what it is about - thanks for sharing your story.

Glad you had fun in the rain, we had similar luck too, however I did get enough feathers to stuff a small pillow but no meat. I too had a blast. Can't wait to get after them again, still have until the end of the month.  ##$%#113
