He is entered in the championship, now the story.
« on: May 18, 2011, 12:22:09 PM »
I hunted Mon. morning and saw many birds, 5 of which were toms. But as it has happened before they hit the ground I call and the hens lead them away. Those hens drive me crazy! Desperate times call for desperate measures I thought.
I know right were these birds like to roost, so my plan was to get right under them on Tues. morn. Then it hit me. If I thought I could go in "in the dark" and set up on these birds, why not go in on Mon. eve. and be there when they get home. So 6:00 PM on Mon. I was set up where I thought they would come. By 7:30 I had 2 jakes within 40 yrds. and the rest of the group was on it's way. Then the twist. The 2 jakes came off the field and flew up to roost a full hour before sunset. Now I had 4 toms, 2 more jakes, and 4 hens closing fast and 2 jakes watching me from above. When the group got about 50 yrds. the hens flew up, then from what I could see at lest 3 of the toms flew up, but not the jakes. Now I think I have 3 birds on the ground and 9 birds in the trees within 50 yrds. of me. I didn't even dare blink for fear of someone seeing me. At times the jakes would be under 10 yrds and never knew I was there. Finally the jakes acted like they were going to fly up at about 20 yrds. I was looking down the field for the other tom and when I looked back there he was at 20 yds. I slowly turned and BOOM! game over. 11" beard 1 1/4" spurs. What a rush!
