Wow what a fun morning ...
« on: May 02, 2011, 09:48:39 AM »
So I left around 8:30 and head to a favorite ground blind...decided to take the bobbin hen with me...got to the blind and put the hen out in front...sat and realized she was way too close...but open woods and up on the ridge they still had a good view of movement...I left her as she was....called on and off for 20 minutes and the hens started talking...no yelps but locators....next thing I know a hen pops up to my right and is looking around and feeding...preening and what not....she circles the decoy and moves off ...about a 100yrds off I still see her and yelp...she yelps back and we're talking and she's heading back when a gobble hits my ears...he's pretty far out ...so I let loose with a series and the live hen yelps and clucks...he's sounding off and she moves off to my left and behind me...lightly yelping....he's to my right and finally is in view...I cluck and yelp and he's all puffed out...then starts going in behind the blind...dang...he saw the live hen...I had a tiny opening over my shoulder in the brushed blind but didn't want to risk hitting brush so close to my face and not getting a clean kill on him...He is way bigger than yesterdays bird and his beard drags on the ground..which is unusual for here due to the cold weather..deep snows...I've never seen him before...it's not the one with the 12" beard....any how he is only 20 yrds away now and I know the live hen is taking him...so when his head went behind a tree I quick turned, standing up and shouldering the gun...The hen must have seen me. They both flattened out and looked like to huge bullets moving through the woods ##$%#12

Another great day in the turkey woods.  Congrats.  Maybe next time, you'll get him.
