Feral Swine (Wild Hogs) in New York. from my DEC email
« on: April 23, 2011, 07:39:00 AM »
DEC has confirmed that feral swine are breeding in Tioga, Cortland and Onondaga counties. Feral swine are an invasive species, capable of causing ecological harm to New York's countryside. In states like Florida, Texas and Georgia where they are currently established, native plants, native wildlife, livestock and agriculture have been negatively impacted. They have high reproductive rates, can compete for food with native wildlife, and carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans. DEC is currently developing strategies for eradicating feral swine from New York's landscape, but resources are not yet in place to implement all of the needed actions, including removal of animals. More importantly, DEC will work with other agencies to identify ways to preclude feral swine from being released to the wild.

Visit the NY DEC's Feral Swine webpage http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/70843.html for more details about this invasive species.

Note that on the right of the NY DEC page is a link to a Michigan Feral Swine page and a National Feral swine site, both have interesting info on this problem

Hogs are a problem--no matter where they show up.  I have no doubt they will be here someday.

At least NY has decided that as long as you are hunting legaly, you can shoot all you see without a limit or season. That should help a bit

Sorry to hear it, zos.  If they're already breeding, NYS is in for it.
They're ALL trophies...it's just that some are bigger than others!

GREAT! If they have reached NY, then they aren't too far from New England. We don't need that. Come on, you folks in NY, PA, VA, and MD are our final defense! Shoot them suckers!  --09--0                          @--0--0108

Yea - looks we are surrounded.  Wonder how they got from Florida and Texas without stopping and stying in VA?
