if you could only hunt the pre-rut, the rut, or post-rut.
Which would you choose and why?

My preference has to be the chase phase. I guess that falls right between the pre and the rut. Luckliy here in Michigan it falls during bow season and if you hit it right you get a good 3-4 days of just crazy excitement !!

I like the chase for the most action but for bow hunting i like the pre-rut.  It just seems that the deer are trolling for doe and moving just a bit more.  If i had to pick a weeks time then it would definately be the last 2-3 days of pre-rut inot the chase.

There all great, but if I had to choose. I will take the post rut. I hunt a lot of public ground and it seems like after the rut period very few hunters continue hunting when  it gets cold. I feel like I get more privacy and the deer seem to relax a little and let there guard down. More interested in finding food and staying warm, so they seem to move more. I get to see a lot of deer I haven't seen before then.

I would be happy to get rut or post rut. It seems like most years the rut here peaks in Feb after the season is over...

in the area i hunt in the buck to doe ratio is so far out of whack we have a large second doe cycle every year.  I don't know if doe go into a third cycle but i saw fawns, here in northern Vt, in late october well under 45 # with spots.  That's unheard of.  I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of willing and able does are not even being bread.

I like the pre rut. I find it a little easier to patern deer when there on the eat, sleep, repeat schedule. Any time in the woods works for me thou.

Rut into the post rut.  During the rut they are running hard all day.  Post rut the big brusiers are still looking for that last chance.

same with me the post-rut it's colder and the deer move alot more here in FL, we can hunt with a muzzloader are bow in are late season so it's like having a 2nd bow season and alot of hunters have given up so you pretty much have the woods to your self.

I like the rut phase, any thing can happen at any time so hunt all day close to some thick cover!

The pre rut is fine, if you enjoy swatting mosquito's.  I prefer either right before or during the rut.  After that, they are mostly nocturnal.  At least the bucks are.
