Kansas rut!
« on: November 16, 2010, 08:39:37 PM »
A bowhunter had a big 9 point at 12 yards today and the deer managed to give him the slip. I was setting at the lodge talking to other hunters when he got in. You can't replace the look on his face, it looked like his eyes were still watering. He saw the buck up on the ridge and grunted at him and then the buck grunted back. He grunted again and the buck snort wheezed and charged down the hill. Long story short he had him near the base of the tree and could never get an ethical shot. It's fun to see someone go through all those emotions. He'll be in the area tomorrow in a different stand, I have my fingers crossed and I know he does too!

The biggest buck I ever saw did just that to me.  I had buck fever bad and rushed the shot missing him at 40 yards through some small tree limbs with my 30-30, never missed a shot that close with a rifle.  That was 2 years ago and I can still picture the scene of that shot today like it was yesterday.

Best of luck to that hunter, I hope he gets his buck!

I hope he gets him! If for nothing more than the reward of waiting for an ethical shot... even at the cost of losing the chance. Good for him.

Happens to the best of us, at least he made a smart decision on the short if he felt it wasn't right. I saw that look on my brother's face all day this past Monday when he balked on a nice 10 pt. He had the dual scope versus iron sight set up and had the deer in the scope and lowered his head to look through the irons sights and when he went back to the scope he moved behind small hill and last he saw of him! Kicked himself all day! @--0--0126
