A good weekend - for the Turkeys
« on: May 02, 2010, 07:24:22 PM »
Well out opener for spring turkey was yesterday, The birds had a great day, the weather was nice, a cool 52 at 4 AM when we all got up and 56 by 5:30 when we were all set up. We put a couple birds to bed on Friday evening and had a couple guys set up nearby. I was set up across the ridge from them and had a couple birds talking by 6 AM then everything went quiet except for a couple of hard billed woodpeckers. At around 7:30 I had two hens and a gobbler walk behind my setup. They wanted nothing to do with me or my calls, walking away and what I thought to be about 45-50 yards I decided to take the shot on the tom when he presented the opportunity. All three birds ran off into the woods, clean miss at an underestimated range, using the range finder it was 71 yards to where they were. We didn't see anymore birds until we were on out way back to camp and beyond shooting time. They were in the same field we walked through to get to where we hunted. We will be on them again next week. Still was a super day in the turkey woods and had a lot of fun.

Keep at and remember 'don't shoot till you can see the ticks on their feathers!" or something like that.
