Mouth calls. What brand do you use?
« on: February 25, 2010, 08:08:23 AM »
Since I am new to turkey hunting(this season will be my third year) I am going to give the mouth calls a try. At the convention I picked up two Perfection Turkey Calls and a Primos one. Which brand do you use?

I am not sure if I should be embarrassed or not I have never been able to use Mouth Calls... They always Gag me...
I have about 10 Mouth calls (still in the box)  along with my Army of Primos and Woodhaven Slate and Box Calls...

I like the screamin' green and Old boss hen from Quaker Boy. I have also liked the sonic dome from primos.

yellowhammer, start practicing now...its gonna take a little time but once u got it .... u got it......Sorry possum about the gagging you get, I don't know what ur doing maybe the frame is too big...they make smaller frames @--0--0117, I've been mouthcalling since 1972 and I've used local calls , quaker boy, and primos, almost every one but I've always used the quad call (4 reeds) its raspier but I always felt it was easier to use...if you have ever used a reed in a school instrument I think that helps, but practice, practice and more practice...It is not easy in the beginning (lots of spit etc.) but once you get the hang of it its like bike riding it comes easy  @--0--0101

I've always been kinda partial to Quaker Boy double reed...I've tried a bunch and keep coming back to it...like 'ol reliable.  As far as the gagging, like DPD said, maybe it's too big.  I usually trim mine down a little so they fit better in my mouth.

Possum your not alone I have a hard time with them. I have found one from Quaker boy That it much smaller I have been able to get this one to work a little bit. But when hunting is here I use a box and a slate call.  -0078     @--0--0109

Woodhaven Hornet my 4 year old can blow it well enough to kill a turkey-- It is only a double reed call but it sounds like a three reed JMO ##$%#115

I have tried a couple of different Nate and Hale mouth calls. They worked well, but you have to make sure you take care of them and clean them good after use. I mostly use a Primos slate call now.

When I hunted turkeys I had a little of almost every brand. Primos, Quaker Calls, Benn Lee, South Land Callers, etc. etc. All did well.
