What's the best in your opinion?
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:52:04 PM »
Thinking about buying a new deer rifle. What do you all think is the best bang for the buck. Been thinking about something in the 270 or 308 range. Just curious what you think. Thanks in advance!

Man there are a lot of guns that will be good for deer hunting. You will get a lot of different opinions on this subject. And you have already said it anything in the .270 to 308 range. But give some thought to the .260, 25-06. I guess it will come down to the type of rifle or manufactor you want say like Remington, Tika, Winchester, Savage, etc, etc. Good luck on your choice....

I'm assuming you want to use the rifle to hunt deer, as that is the most common big game animal.  Either cartridge would be fine.  I think there is a wide variety of factory loads available, if you want to pay the price.  If you reload, well, there are endless possibilities.  I tend to favor the .30 calibers, but there are others equally effective.  Recently, I have read a little bit about "small for the caliber" bullets, driven at higher than normal speeds, on big game.  They seem to be pretty effective.

I agree with Red.  If given a choice of .270 or .308, I'd definitely choose the .308.   Personally, I hunt with a Browning A-bolt .300 WSM.  Take my advice, though, and I'm going to open a can of worms here but, whatever you choose, I'd opt for a Savage rifle if you can't afford a Browning.

Pretty tough to argue against going with a 30-06, you'll be able to find ammo just about everywhere, and it'll kill em dead.

Well Said. 30-06 shells can be found in any mom and pop store. Something to keep in mind if you will be hunting different states and find out your shells are home on the kitchen counter. It's a very versatile gun.

I own a Ruger M77 270 and Love it...
But I guess my next one would be a Ruger M77 30-06 just because Ammo is not going to be in short supply for that Caliber...

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. I'm going Friday to see what the local gun store has. I got to thinking about the ammo situation and leaning toward a 30-06 now. I really appreciate all the useful information. Thanks again and safe hunting to all.

I'm partial to the Weatherby Mark V in 30-06, it has the shortest bolt throw on the market and it'll spoil you, its HARD for me to pick up anything else these days to hunt with

When I got back into hunting and had a son that wanted to hunt too, I bought a 270 Savage because it was the least expensive gun I could find and at the time I needed all the gear.  I have more expensive rifles now but I prefer that synthetic stock 2370 Savage....it shoots great, I love the trigger feel, and has never failed me.
