WHAT FOOD PLOT FORAGE DO DEER LIKE THE MOST?
« on: October 16, 2009, 04:10:02 PM »
We have talked a lot about what to plant in food plots, but I wonder what do deer like the most of all of the things we could possibly plant. I had heard for years that they love oats more than anything that you could plant, so what is the truth? Let's find out! Are we being lured into planting stuff for us or the deer? I want to plant high protein for the deer in the Spring, but in the Fall I want the deer to run over each other to get into my food plots! I'll put out cotton candy if that will bring 'em in!

I just think it depends on where you are in the country and what you personally like.  People love brassicas my deer will not touch them.  Others don't like ryegrass, and I have harvested more deer off of ryegrass than anything.  I had great success with WTI Imperial Clover last year, and I am hoping for great results this year.  People have always preached oats to me, but I have had little success with oats.  I am a trial and error guy.  I don't believe anything until I try to myself.

I believe the hardest hit-attractive plot I've ever planted and hunted over was a mixture of Oats, Ryegrass, wheat and rape. my #1 winter foodplots will always include Oats-Ryegrass.

Bubba Brown I have been search all over for a Cotton Candy Machine this morning... LOL

Serious I have found out over the past 4 years I have planted different things in various Plots in or near the same area.
Winter Peas get mowed down 1st before they are 10 Inches tall
Clover (WTI White, Yucchi, Dutch White) second.
Winter Greens (Rape, Turnips, Mustard, Chickory) after the Frost they eat it to the roots then pull up the turnips...
Buck Forage Oats .
Marshall Rye.

bubba,

i'm fairly new at food plotting myself, but i believe a program thru the seasons producing adequate tonage for the herd you are carrying along with mineral supplements at least 2x per year for bucks and does is vital. so far up north here, no plow in spring and summer was devoured but was able to keep pace with my herd.  my alpha rack plus is still being established, my chicory didn't grow well for spring and summer, my bucks and bosses is doing great for spring, summer and fall, and now my wintergreens and buck forage oats are the attraction plots they are after since several heavy frosts.

rye wheat and oas is the most common planting in Alabama. I have had good luck with wintergreens and WTI extreme and their clover.

My plots this year where all WTI forage oats mixed with wintergreens and tall tine tubers. I also over seeded them with WTI Clover in selected spots

The deer here do not seem to care for the oats, but the turkeys seem to love them
I put in both WTI TallTineTubers and WTI WinterGreens along with WTI Cloiver, chicory and this year put in their Edge product

i really like planting  a variety of plots in the south especially florida our summers are brutal lol so it may be insurance to have multiple types but my favorites are Buck Forage oats, power plant WTI, and of course a chicory/clover mix. our native vegitation doesnt stay real palletable for long so a good mix of plots work really well here.

MY FAVORITE FORAGE FOR MY FOOD PLOT WOULD HAVE TO ONE THAT WILL GROW WELL AND SURVIVES THE WHITE CLAY/SAND SOILS OF NORTHEAST TWIGGS COUNTY. ANY SUGGESTIONS; WE TRIED WHITETAIL EXTREME , NOT ENOUGH RAIN .  WEEDS TOOK OVER.  HOPING FOR ENOUGH RAIN THIS FALL AND WINTER.   -0078
