Is it legal to shoot a bearded hen where you live?
« on: August 30, 2009, 04:16:50 PM »
I'm suprised at the number of TH members that are seeing bearded hens. I have been watching one for the past three years. I guess they are not as rare as I thought. I'm not aware of any place that allows you to shoot a hen so I was wondering if it is it legal to shoot a bearded hen in the area where you live?
I'd rather be hunting

A bearded hen is legal to shoot in Michigan.  BTW, I had two of them in my back yard today.  Two separate flocks came in. The first one was the same one I have been seeing most of the summer, 3 hens and 12 chicks (which are now as big or bigger than chickens), the second flock was two hens plus 5 chicks.  Each flock had one bearded hen.  The bearded hen in the 2nd flock was much larger, and had a longer beard (at least 4", maybe a shade longer)  than the bearded hen in the first flock.

In Iowa, any bearded turkey is legal in the spring and any turkey is legal in the fall.  The tom that I took in my avatar was actually with a bearded hen when I took him.

In VA, either sex in the fall and you have to take the bird to a check station - they age them and evaluate spring survival rates.  In the spring, it is bearded bird - can be a hen.
