I have a mole problem
« on: August 25, 2009, 10:00:41 PM »
Does anybody know how to get rid of moles?  I have moles really bad this year.  I have been trying to poison them all summer and they are getting worse.  And tearing up my yard.  Any advice on getting rid of them.

My granddad use to put chewing gum down in the holes for them to eat.  He said that they would eat it and it would get stuck inside of the mole and it would die.  It seemed to work his yard would be full of dirt mounds and after the gum the number of mounds stopped.  He also would use mole traps from time to time that he picked up a the hardware store.  Good luck.

A few sticks of TNT will solve that problem

My good ole buddy Colby takes care of yard patrol. Colby is my best bud. Rat Terrier. He handles the situation rather nicely. He might dig a few holes to catch them but it is better than the whole yard turned over by the moles.

Would probably get em but also do more damage than the moles.  But thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind.

Was the gum chewed first or did he put down fresh pieces?

It's my understanding that the moles are looking for grubs.  Get rid of the grubs, and the moles will disappear (they'll probably go to your neighbor's yard)
I have trapped a few, and it's a time consuming affair.  You have to identify the active runways, and set your trap or traps.  The traps are not 100% successful. I have found them tripped, but no mole.  You may catch a few, but if there is food (grubs) available, other moles will come in.
Don't ask the Lord to guide your steps, unless you're willing to move your feet.

He would use Wrigley's wintergreen.  The pieces were un chewed and broke in half.

I tried one of those solar powered sensors that emmitted a sound to chase the moles away - it works, but problem is it only covers about 20 square feet.  To cover the whole yard would have been too many units and too much $$$$.  I use vinegar and tabasco sauce mix, pour it in the holes - this seems to work as well.
