Title: I guess I have to get a crossbow now....
Post by: [Blocked] on July 21, 2009, 11:33:21 AM
I had the opportunity to go to a demonstration this past weekend that NJ Fish and Wildlife put on for the Hunter Safety Instructors.  We had crossbows legalized in the state for this year and they thought it would be nice if we knew what we were talking about for safety with them.  I NEVER SHOULD HAVE PUT ONE TO MY SHOULDER AND SQUEEZED THE TRIGGER.  Talk about getting hooked.  Now I have to figure out where I'm going to find money for this venture.  I liked the 10 point crossbow the best.  We had them, as well as Horton, Parker, Excalibur showing off there wares to us.  It was a lot of fun and very informational driven as well.  A lot of information came from Ohio as it seems that they have had the crossbow for a long time as a hunting venue.  The interesting part that it never hurt their bow season and allowed a lot of people to get into bow hunting by first using a crossbow and then moving to a compound or traditional bow later.  They believe it was from the early success with the crossbow that led the people into the other. I was more than impressed with the presentation and the opportunity to try many out without the pressure of buy, buy, buy..    The CB manufacturers all have very good price structures for purchases by Hunter Safety Instructors. Like 20-30% off WHOLESALE prices.

Nothing like having a wide array of weapons.  Crossbows are fun to shoot, I still have a 20+ year old recurve crossbow I used as a teenager hunting in Arkansas.  It is a Barnett Wildcat.  I called a few years ago because my limb needed replacing.  To my surprise, they still had parts for a weapon that old!!!  I thought that was pretty good.  That is great you can get a discount, I would definitely jump on that!

As long as NY does not allow them, I'm not going to worry about getting a crossbow. They do look like they could be fun to shot

NJ, you do the review for us, tell us about the differences between all of the bows you shot, and why you chose the one you chose.

NJ, I shot the 10 point but, I opted for the Horton HD-175 instead.  My reason was simple.  The 10 point was noisy and the Horton wasn't.  All you have to do is tap on the stock of the 10 point and you can hear it rattle.  Tap anywhere you want on the Horton and you won't hear anything that may spook a deer.  No, I don't work for Horton....I just prefer their crossbow over any others.

I used a ten point on a hog hunt about 4 months ago, and I have to say the opposite.  It was pretty quiet.  It wasn't as quiet as some of the compounds up at the range, but it did the trick nicely for me.

I don't know all that much about crossbow hunting. Here in Missouri,I got my doctor to complete a form that I sent to MDC to legally allow me to hunt with one now. I have purchased two used ones on line. I am still attempting to  get used to them. They seem to be easier to use from a small ground blind than a horizontal bow. Still, I like the vertical bow better for various reasons.

I am still planning to purchase a less expensive one to try in the woods.  Then If I like it I will go deeper in debt for a better Quality crossbow.  I will have one very soon to use this season.   I have been looking on different web sites.   Nothing has really turned my crank in  the "cheap "  crossbows yet.

Many years ago I shot a crossbow that PSE made. It was the first crossbow that shot an arrow instead of a bolt. It was nice and shot fast. Good luck.

I believe I would like it to if I was to shoot one so I try to stay away from them. To me There ain't nothing like my compound. Until I get unable to pull it back I think I will have to stick with it. But their again I have never shot a cross bow! I have had the chance a few times just didn't do it I guess  I am afraid I will Like it enough to have to go buy one.

I hate to admit this, but I got a crossbow because I couldn't shoot a compound very well.  I tried a bunch of different things and just couldn't shoot groups good enough to feel good about my ability to make kill shots.  But I shot my hunting buddies crossbow and what a difference.  Now that I have one, I can shoot great groups and I am excited about getting in the woods.

I was never perfect with my compond bow but i never made an unethical shot either and took a few doe (never had a shot at a buck).  8 years ago i injured my right elbow and was unable to shot my bow any longer.  I was so glad that Virginia allowed me (with Dr. report) to use a cross bow but not all counties (including the one i live in) went along with the law until Virginia changed to law completely and now consideres a crossbow archery equipment and can be used during any archery season in th state.  I have killed two doe now with my crossbow and really enjoy it.  Still waiting for that buck to come in though.
