Title: Sighting in
Post by: [Blocked] on April 06, 2020, 11:13:23 AM
Today or tomorrow I will have to sight in my turkey gun. I am all out of my Nitros and they just cost way too much. I bought some LongBeards #6's to try last year. I shot them twice and they just hit a little lower than the Nitros so I have to do some scope adjustments. I hope it turns out to be that easy. I have been shooting the Nitros from Nitro cartridge Company for 15 years and they will smoke a bird at 50 yds. The price has gone way up I usually split a box of 25 with my buddy but he switched to Longbeards last year and says he is happy with them and it wouldn't cost him 8.00 bucks a shell. Box of 25 went from 140.00 with shipping to 215. with shipping- I might a well try some TSS loads!!!

it's crazy what they get for turkey loads. I won't pay the big buck either

That's why most manufacturers went to 5 and 10 round boxes from the standard 25. The cost per round is a shame. I like the longboards also.

My vote is for the Winchester XR Longbeards #6. I had previously used the Remington Nitro's #6 and they always did the job. My Mossberg 835 did not pattern well out to 40 yards but inside that, they were lethal. Winchester had advertised that their Longbeards would put more pellets in the 10 inch circle than other loads. So  tried them and they were awesome! I understand about different loads, chokes, etc. I use the Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag with an HS Strut Undertaker choke and shoot the #6's. I tried the #5's and they did not do as well although better than the Remington Nitro's. Here are my patterns at 20, 30 and 40 yards. Sorry it's a little blurry but I think you get the picture here. They work for my gun, that's all I know.

Longbeard #6/#5 ar both good in either the 3" or 3.5" loads.

Next to that I always had the good patterns from just plain ole WW XX Turkey loads.

Bought a box of longbeards a couple of years ago, but still get better patterns with hevi shot.  I have an Undertaker tube, but actually get better patterns with a standard remchoke full tube.
