Title: 2nd turkey day
Post by: [Blocked] on April 22, 2018, 07:30:30 PM
well, the river was just cresting the bridge this morning. i went low today figuring to cut the toms off before they go to the top. the toms moved. some were in the normal place above the house on the 'cliff' and the others were off the property. at 8:00 there was a tom gobbling in my normal spot. i tried to sneak up the hill, but it was still ice and snow and noisy. he was gone when i got there.

i figured i'd sit in the clearing until 11:00. there was no way to get close. sure enough, a crow calls out and a gobble right where i came from. gotta love it. i try to pull him up and a hen comes in, no tom. then the other group by the house goes off. no dice, they go the other way. i called in 2 more hens, no toms.

at 10:15 i call and wham. 3 toms go off on top of the hill and fairly close. i call and the go off. they are on a rope. i get ready as soon as i hear them stumbling over each other down the hill hammering every 10-15 yards. they were all cookie cutters. i picked the biggest one and let the browning bps 10 gauge do the rest. 7/8" spurs and 10" beard. all 3 of them had broken beards from the deep snow. the bottoms were squared off on the bottom. looked odd

the other 2 just stayed there so i figured i'd have some fun. i called, the gobbled and strutted. i'd call, they gobbled and strutted. this went on for 20 minutes straight. it was a blast. it was the most gobbling i heard all day @--0--0105

the 2nd pic is for you HM. it wasn't quite a breakfast beer, but tasted just as good

i forgot to mention. that was the 10 gauges last turkey hunt. this was my last shell from the box. i'll keep it around for canadian geese. it's just a toad to lug around. i'll take the benelli 12 guage from now on. i bet it's close to 1/2 the weight

i guess i'm getting old @--0--0100 --099-780

Congrats HM, way to stick with it!!  I just got home from three days of hunting, empty handed.  It was 11am on the second day before I heard a gobble, had those two working for about an hour, finally had one within about 80 yards when he got tired of his girlfriend making him do all the walking and strolled away.  Had one going at daybreak today, but he got intercepted by a hen and then the rain cut loose.  Didn't hear or see another bird after that.  Glad you and HM and MIB are getting it done!

Congrats on your 10ga bird! Yari, I am in a blind right now.  Very quiet this morning, only heard on gobble.  Watched a couple hens feeding in an open field, hoped they would draw a tom on, but no dice.

Congrats!!! I can't imagine turkey hunting with snow on the ground... not that I wouldn't, but never had the opportunity to.

Congratulations! Nice job! We had snow on the ground for our season opener last week! Only difference is you also have a tom on the ground and I only had snow!
