Title: New Pond
Post by: [Blocked] on April 05, 2017, 10:49:23 AM
Back in November, I bought 12 acres, 13 miles from the house, that had a 3 acre pond on it. My 6 year old grandson loves to fish with me and I have always wanted a nice pond. hope to build a cabin on it this summer.

We didnt fish it any during the winter and yesterday was our first official fishing trip. Jake, my wife and I headed over there around 10 am with a john boat and some worms. Fishing was slow because it still hasn't warmed up a lot yet but we caught a few and had a great time. Jake caught a small crappie and a few bluegill with worms. I caught a big crappie with a jig and the wife caught a few bluegill. She hung into a big bowfin (never heard of these until I moved to Kentucky) but it cut the line as we were getting it into the boat. it was probably 3 lbs. big ugly dude!

Looks great, both the pond and the shirtsleeve weather.  35 mph winds with a chance of snow here tonight - the poor ducks on my new pond are looking kinda seasick riding the waves out there.

Me, bugfixer and the wives spent the afternoon and evening at the pond today. The wives brought in some bluegills and bug and I wore out the crappie. He caught two slabbers. probably 1  1/2 lbs each. Wasn't keeping them today so they went back in. Ill post some pics tomorrow

Here is a pic of a bass I caught in the pond the other day....

Also, a pic of the cabin as its being built. The structure will be 30 X 30 and 16' from ground to the bottom of the truss's. The cabin part will be the back 20 X 30 with the front 10' being a 10 X 30 covered porch. The floor will be 8' off the ground because it tends to flood here...

Post by: [Blocked] on June 20, 2017, 10:56:42 AM
Saturday, the wife, grandson and I went to the pond. I wanted to put a fish feeder out in the water. I tried to do it by myself from the boat but during the process realized I was not going to be able to do it from the boat. After struggling for about 20 minutes, I just bailed off the boat and got it done. After I got out, I stripped down to the skivvies and set my shorts out to dry right in front of the wife and grandson. My grandson though it was hilarious that I was sitting in my underwear, drinking a beer and fishing. I told him it was just another normal day in the life of me..   @--0--0120

We also stayed until almost midnight because Jake wanted to do some nighttime catfishing. we caught to small yellow cats but that was all...  still had a great time though!!

Well, i did what trump couldn't.  I built a wall. The wall separating the cabin and the porch is built. Now were getting the rough cut siding stained to go on. The 4x8 windows have been delivered and hope to get them installed this weekend.

Looks fantastic HM!

Word of caution on the siding:  When you pre-stain it, be sure to let things dry thoroughly before you hang it.  Made that mistake on this house, they prestained all of the cedar tongue & groove siding but were slapping it up quickly after the staining.  The shrinkage that happened after it was up created a real mess, with some of the joints coming apart and a lot of warping.  Really needed to let that stuff cure first & have the majority of the moisture come out.

Well, after getting the ditch dug for the power and water lines, we passed all inspections. Time to connect to the water meter and bury it all in. Well, the wife and I had a trip planned to Harrodsburg, KY to start on the bourbon trail and visit 5 or 6 distilleries so no cabin work this past weekend. Yesterday morning early, I drove over to the cabin to see what fittings I needed and to make a shopping list for other projects there. What I found was water... The water meter had blown off the line and had filled my trench completely up and water was running everywhere under the cabin. the pipes in the trench were floating and out of place, the water was cutting trenches in the sand under the cabin and everything on the ground was wet. I immediately started building dams and ditches to divert the water around the cabin instead of under it. they finally got it fixed about 2 hours later. They said they knew they had a leak in that area since Saturday but waited until Monday to check it out. 60 thousand gallons of water flowed through my trench, under my cabin and into the pond. the water guys did pump out the trench so that was a big help...  Happy eclipse day!!!!

We have power and water!!

That step is now done. Bug covered the trench with the power conduit and water lines on Sunday and the power company came on Monday and set the pole and made it hot. It has been a long and tiring process to get utilities hooked up. All of the crazy requirements and inspections had me pulling my hair out. But its done and now I can sit out on the porch under the ceiling fan...

On to plumbing...

well, the first test is coming. Whats left of Harvey is heading our way. We are expecting to get 4 to 8 inches of rain in the next 24 hours. As you can see from the map, I have rivers on two sides of my cabin and a pond in front. 17 ft is flood stage. 24 ft is probably bad for me. They are saying the green river could get to 25 ft. I've done what I could so we will just have to wait and see...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2TDeywCX6M   -   footage of the Green River last year at   20.00 ft on 07/10/2016
at around 2:30 in the video you can see my pond and it is flooded....

Say a little prayer for me...

Hopefully the storm will lose most of its water before it approaches your property and the rain amounts are exaggerated. Good luck and hopefully the waters won't rise too bad.
Title: Re: New Pond
Post by: [Blocked] on August 31, 2017, 07:11:21 PM
Good luck - mother nature is gonna do what she's gonna do - prepare as best you can & then get ready to deal with whatever happens.  If the areas around you aren't too waterlogged already, maybe the runoff won't be so bad & river levels will fall short of their predictions - Hang in there HM!

definitely dodged a bullet. The water got to within 20 feet of the cabin so no worries. I also learned more about how the river rising actually affects my property. Its only a manner of time before we get hit with a big flood there that does get in but for now, we are good.

never a dull moment at the cabin....

OK.. here's the story and its true to the very word...

A local guy had told me a good way to get rid of some turtles and bowfin (grennels) from our pond was to set limb lines with thick cut bacon as bait. Limb lines would be hard from my pond because of the shallow water at the banks so my grandson, Jake, and I decided to do some jug fishing instead. The goal was to bait some jugs and throw them out in the pond friday night and check them saturday morning. well, it rained friday. So saturday, he convinced me to throw them out that morning. as soon as they were out and I was back working on the cabin, he came running up every 5 minutes saying we had fish. now, keep in mind I was not expecting to catch anything in the day time and after many false alarms (and 2 small turtles) I told him not to come get me unless one was really moving.

10 minutes later he came a running saying one was really moving. not really believing him, I looked out the cabin window and sure enough, a jug was zipping across the pond. thinking that we probably had a small fish or a fast turtle, we got in the john boat and started off after it. when we got about 30 yards from the jug, it went completely under the water. A gallon milk jug vanished from sight for about 10 seconds!! now im wishing i had brought my pistol. the scene from Jaws when he said "we need a bigger boat" also crossed my mind.  We let him run around for awhile and when he tired down some, we moved towards it and I grabbed the jug. as I pulled, a flathead catfish surfaced beside the boat. he had to be at least 35 or 40 lbs. maybe even bigger... He was around 4 foot long and his head looked like a football. Now, here I am in a small boat, with a 6 year old and a catfish on a hook bigger than he is. I had no gun, no phone, no camera and no intention of trying to get this monster in the boat. his top fin had to be 8 inches long. all I could imagine was him flopping around and sticking one of us with that dagger on his back. too be honest, im not sure I could have even lifted him into the boat. I decided all i could do was try and get the hook out and let him go, which i managed to do...  me and jake just sat there a few minutes unable to believe what we saw. I have caught some big cats in my day but nothing that big, and from a 3 acre pond that is 4 foot at its deepest spot!

My wife tried to take pics from the bank but it was just too far to really show it and I only had his head out of the water...

Today I went to jakes school for a grandparent lunch. I think everyone there, kids and teachers alike, had heard Jake tell the story and came to me to see if it was true..  it was true, alright... and were going jugging again this weekend but you better believe I will be better prepared now...

that's a huge fish for that small pond. is there a river you are attached to? did he come in during a flood?

YOU NEED A BIGGER BOAT ##$#@#$%

there is a river that floods into the pond every few years. it flooded a week ago but didnt flood enough to bring that brute in.

it's strange to think about a pond of that size and depth holding fish. up here it would freeze out every year

Fantastic story HM, and your grandson will be telling that for decades to come.  We used to jug fish on occasion as a kid - what a blast.  When the fish (or turtles) are biting you get a workout chasing them around.  We always jugged during the day & rolled them all up before dark, and generally had lots of action, enough to keep you busy if you had a dozen or more out.

The pond & lake next to the house where I grew up would get replenished by the Mississippi every few decades too, so you never knew what you'd pull up, and many times when Dad &  I caught big cats river fishing (too big to clean) we'd release them in the pond, so on occasion someone would hook into a 10-20 pounder, usually break it off, but be telling stories all over our little town - we'd just chuckle.

just an aside. a guy on the St Croix River caught a world record catch and release channel cat this week. 52" long. estimated 70-80 lbs. it was huge. i don't remember the girth. just a pig
