Title: Planting again...
Post by: [Blocked] on September 27, 2016, 09:51:37 AM
We planted 3 clover plots back in the spring. Then it rained almost every day for 3 months and drowned everything out, except the weeds. It seemed the clover never really got established enough to survive the monsoon. Who knew it would rain so much?

So in August, we decided to replant with No-Plow.... and the rain quit and I mean QUIT! Nothing, notta, zilch! The morning dew allowed the seed to sprout, then it withered, and died in dry, 90+ degree temps...

This afternoon we are going to replant No-Plow again. Rain is finally forecasted for most of the week and with the temps starting to cool, we figured this was our last window to get plots in.

I have been planting food plots for 30 years and have NEVER had this much trouble. Hopefully 3 times is a charm...

Luckily for us we had plenty of seed on hand!

good luck. man that is frustrating. at least you have a long growing season so you get a couple chances at it

Similar situation here HM.  I was able to get Snort's Buckatash in the ground in early August and it is doing great, but the oats & chicory I planted two weeks ago are really struggling - zero rain since then.  Some of the oats are up, but starting to wither.  Nothing but weeds so far in the chicory plot.  Looked like we were in a "can't miss" mode for rain Sunday, but the whole string just fizzled when it got to Illinois.

We got the plot power tilled, they we drug it smooth with a steel grate. Planted No-Plow with a little extra clover thrown in for good measure. Then the plot was drug smooth again. Some rain is forecasted every day for the rest of the week... Cross your fingers,,,

We decided if it doesn't grow this time, it must be haunted. Indian burial ground or something...

Got a very brief shower here today too - hoping it's enough to revive my oats and get my chicory to sprout.  Scattered showers in the forecast for the next few days, crossing my fingers & toes, not too many growing days left for us before frost (maybe 3 weeks)

well, we got one small rain the day after planting and then all of the rain that was forecasted for the weekend dried up. No rain in sight...

this has been our hottest driest year on record. My late aug. planting of wintergreens and ttt missed the rain and sat for three weeks. It finally got a light rain and then dry again.Total of three times since then it rained.About half of it has come up and varies from 1=6 inches in hieght. It is growing but won,t likely get any turnip bulbs before frost hits.Hopefully enough growth to bring them in for a while but it won,t feed them this winter for long.
