Title: Calling all New Yorkers and Northeastern Turkey Hunters
Post by: [Blocked] on April 13, 2012, 06:29:29 PM
OK-it has already started and I need my fellow Talk Hunting brothers and sisters to weigh in! Rumors are flying here in New York that the birds are already strutting/nesting, it will be all over by May first (our NY opening day) and the season is going to be tough. Veteran turkey hunters, I need your expert opinion about NY and/or the NorthEast region. What do you say????http://www.talkhuntin.com/Smileys/classic/animal0031.gif

it seems like their early and I've seen a truckload in the lots strutting and showing off..but that is normal...they will display and strut all year long, its a guy thing with them...nesting early may help the cause...gobblers still want to mate and if the hen isn't on the roost with him in the morning chances are you can call him in...a problem a lot of fellers were having the past few years is that the hens were with the gobblers thruout May and really nested late and were breeding in June more heavily...this year I feel its gonna be a good year and an active one....i'll know for sure in a couple of weeks ;D

Usually right now especially with the farmers plowing and discing the birds are in groups...a few hens and toms displaying...nope all I have seen is lone Toms....and they are really covering distance with no more that a Gobble or two in the late..8'ish  morning...not sure whats going on......for if the hens laid early then with the very hard freezes they are tending dead nest I fear.... @--0--0117 which would set them back and ready to try again soon...2 1/2 weeks to go ....we'll see

saw hens out at 7:00 am today...not on the nest then....if the nests are dead from freezes they will re-nest and abandoned the dead eggs....If they nest during the beginiing of the season I sure think you'll be able to work that gobbler this year @--0--0118

Been seeing hens crossing the roads mid to late morning the last few weeks. I think they have been nesting here for a few weeks now. Opening day is next Monday April 30th. Time will tell then what will happen. @--0--0109

Our season opens on Saturday the 28th, I have been seeing toms by themselves, I think the hens are already nested here, so that should be good for getting the toms to move on a call. We will see how it all plays out on Saturday. I do think we will be just fine. I hope.

As you've seen from storm pics...any early nesters are toast...I woke this morning to a loud cluck...and this is what I found...she's looking lonely..and having a hard time walking in the heavy snow....

Good luck and let us know how you make out. We open Tuesday, May 1st. I took a ride down to check my ridge today and it is still covered with snow. Yikes.
