Title: ZLong's Hunting Roadshow Circus
Post by: [Blocked] on October 19, 2011, 08:01:04 AM
10/15- Clear and calm in tha AM,  the moon's brightness let me walk to the stand without a flashlight.
After I got settled in I seen two silouettes in the filed and look at them with the Nikons....two does. They feed on through and get back in the thick stuff just as the sky starts to turn pink.  The rest of the morning was pretty uneventful until around 9:00 when a gray fox come easing through the lane. I would have shot it, but it was a little out of range and didn't stop.
10/15-PM  Got settled in to the evening lock-on where I have been seeing a 130-135 class eight point every evening. About five thirty I have three does come right under me and feed on through the acorns heading to the green field. About fifteen minutes later two more does walk the exact same path as the first does and head straight for the green field.  I binoc the does already out in the field and two more have slipped in from somewhere that I am not sure of, so I have 7 does out in the plot eating away and I am just knowing big nasty is about to come through.... no show.
10/16-AM.Clear and Calm. First buck sighting of the season while on stand.  Was hunting a white oak loaded with acorns and about 0630 two racked bucks come down the edge of the beans, one was a shooter (120-130) eight and the other was a baby eight. The deer ended up about sixty yards feeding in the beans as they headed to bed an no shot opportunity was ever given. Had one doe come in about 8 to snack on some acorns but didn't blaze her.
10/16-PM windy and hot.....Sat all afternoon in the sun, actually got sunburn on the right side of my face.  Had ole coon come through at fifteen yards so I thought now was the time to practice  @--0--0121  I drew back and center the pin inbetween the coons eyes and tapped the release.  THWACK!!!!  Coon flopped around like a head shot turkey for a minute then the deal was done.  Had one doe and infant come in at dark and fed for a minute before easing on out into the beans for the night.
10/17-PM  Windy and cloudy as all get out..... Had one stand in mind that would be borderline with the wind out of the SW like it was.... chanced it and went on out..... Sat in the stand for about an hour and looked at the radar on my phone. The radar showed red and yellow all over me. I made the executive decision to get down out of the stand and go sit in the house and call it a day. Got inside and the bottom fell out of the clouds... it rained and rained and rained. The wind changed direction to NW after the rain and I eased back down the driveway for a look at the plot.... four bucks standing in the plot....  @--0--0127
I grabbed my bow and was planning my stalk. After gettin to about 60 yards the deer eased behind a brushpile so I made a quick, agile move to the pile and climbed up quietly. I tucked down in the pile and waited on the bucks to walk by. Five minutes and here they come... two spikes, a little six, and a two year old eight walked within 20 yards. I could have gigged anyone of them, but their not what I am after.
Calling for wind the next two days, so I probably won't make it out in the evening but Friday, Sat, Sun it's game on

The little ones are still goofing around here, the big guys have changed their attitudes since the velvet dropped. That one the other day reminded me of two longbeards together. One was the boss dog and the other was just a looker, probably learning from daddy.  The little bucks will probably start gettin fussy before too long.. probably after this cold front comes in.

I haven't yet... I will have to do it when I get home because my email won't open here at work to upload it.

I hunted at home opening weekend and I am going down south in a little while.
I won't hunt the honey hole until the gators get outta dodge and they drop the water to winter level.... let that happen and I can already see the blood trail  ;D

10/18-PM  Got out yesterday afternoon in the 30mph winds...  Figured I wouldn't have seen anything but tht all changed about 5:00.  Had two does and a fawn come out about sixty yards away and started feeding in the plot. the deer were extremely nervous due to the high winds and spent more time lookin up than feeding.
At about 6:00pm had a nice eight step out into the plot and begin feeding. He acted like he didn't have a care in the world, but must have said something to one of the does that offended her because she flat out whooped his rear end across the plot and ran him into the woods. Even in the high winds I could hear her hooves hitting him.
Headed out here after while to the land of giants and hope I'll be updating next time with a picture.

10/21-pm
Got out this afternoon and set up at the end of an oak flat with a green patch comin up to it.... At about 5 I had four does step out and start feeding my way.  They were all calm and collective, The wind was perfect and I knew it was time to follow a blood trail.  The lead doe hung a left before she got to me and started feeding under a white oak and I thought it was going to be a watching session if the others continued the same path she did, but little did I know here and the second doe wasn't real good friends and she stood up on her hind legs and run the other doe towards me.  After she felt like she was far enough she turned and went back to the white oak and the other doe kept on a comin.  She was at 50, then 40, then 30, and then was at 22 yards broadside.  I eased into full draw and right when I did that she turned straight at me........ I waited for about thirty seconds and she turned back broadside and I let the pink victory fly and you talk about a great shot... perfect heart shot and don't mean to be graffic but that Rage Two blade did what they say it does.. blood was going everywhere as she ran outta there.
She ran about thirty yards and hit the thicket and I heard her crash. With all the commotion the other does ran out in the field and were about 45 yards away. I started to fling one but didn't want to get greedy.. I kill one tomorrow.  First blood of the year and it feels just like the first one I ever killed.

Well.... I have freezer meat now  @--0--0121

10/22- AM  Was down south this weekend and after eating at jacks decided on the morning sit.  I chose a lock-on we had hung at the end of Sep. that was surrounded by some white oaks.  Got settled in and the first part of the morning was rather uneventful for down there (It's usually wide open on the morning sits) At 8:15 had a doe ( I thought it was one) come from behind me on the way to the acorns. She walked behind a tree and I started to draw on her and about halfway through my draw I heard a deer blow directly behind me... and off they went... it was two does.  About thirty minutes later I had a spike come in and eat under me until nine thirty and mosey on off.
10/22-PM  Sat on the edge of a plot with sawtooths and white oaks in one corner.  Was a very eventful afternoon. 5 minutes after being up a tree had three big longbeards come through the plot then right behind them was a doe with a little one. They ended up feeding under me all afternoon and about every thirty minutes I was having deer come through until dark.  I ended up having 5 does, 2 spikes, a nice 6, and right at dark I had a borderline 8 come in.  Fayette produced just like it should, but I do have some bad news about the property.... hogs are starting to show up.. we had some on camera and some of our fields are rooted up... gotta get to killin them... but also on camera we had three bucks that will gross in the 160's to low 170's.  We moved some cameras to try to dig a little deeper on em.   If we can find where their living we might get a crack at one before rut.  I'll post some pictures of them if I can get ahold of that SD Card next weekend.

10/24-PM
Slipped into the front yard stand as soon as I got home from work yesterday.  At about 5:30 I had a single doe come out and head through the greens straight to the white oak I was sitting in.  She was a whole 5 foot from the base of the tree I was in and just munching away. I thought about taking her out but I am not a fan of straight down shooting because you either hit them in the spine and mess up part of the tenderloin or you just one lung them and they run for a mile before dying.  So I just enjoyed her company until dark and she fed right on out into the pasture.   Takin a break from the action this afternoon to do a couple of euro mounts for some guys I know, but I'll be back after em Wed.  I like these quick hunts like the ones after work, but I better enjoy them because when the time changes I won't be able to do it.

10/28 - 11/6

Been hunting everyday for the past nine days..... needless to say I am exhausted...
I killed a doe Saturday evening down south and forgot the date cards and the cameras (What a goof)
Seen a boat load of deer, the last count it was right at 60 for a total seen throughout last week give or take a few does.
But an average of six a day with some days being more and others being less.... so far though (knock on wood) the skunk has eluded me...  I killed an Alabama six point (legal 5 point with one point less than an inch) on the refuge earlier last week and got some trail cams of a big one at the house and finally layed eyes on him Friday evening and man is he a monster... I backed out after hunting him for three days and am waiting him out until rifle season opens.
Still no sign of rut.  I did grunt and bleat and two year old eight point into bow range Saturday evening right at dark.  He come in directly down wind and never knew I existed, he kept cleaning his nose with his tongue and you could even see the snot dripping out he was so close and lookin for whatever grunted at him. Pretty fun stuff.
Back to the grind this week, so looks like I'll be scouting from the truck window this week for the Sunday evening hunt.

The youth hunt is Saturday and I get the privledge of taking my little cousin south with us for his first ever deer hunt.  I am more fired up about it than I am any other hunts this year.  I hope he whacks something...man, I hope he whacks something,
Wish us luck down there and hope he shoots straight, and doesn't get shook up too bad  @--0--0121
Title: Re: ZLong's Hunting Journal Turkey Season Updated
Post by: [Blocked] on April 06, 2012, 09:19:25 AM
March-  Started out opening weekend in Fayette and it produced just like it should.. Chase and I were both able to harvest a bird and had multiple birds talk to us throughout the adventure.  Had that ordeal happen in Tuscaloosa a little while later that about killed me... and didn't harvest a bird on that trip. Ventured back to fayette solo and was able to jelly head a two year old gobbler.  After that turkey we made a trek to Gainesville and was able to take part in the harvest of two more gobblers from some of my buddies.
April (Thus far)-Last weekend I was able to travel to fayette again and had one firing off right at daylight close, so I eased around and set up, whispered some sweet nothings to him, and was standing on his head in fifteen minutes.... after that I hauled wagon to Tennessee to hunt the opener there and when I arrived I seen a dead gobbler hanging by his feet on the front porch of the cabin, ole partner had done slipped one in on me  @--0--0105,  So I grabbed my stuff and told him I was hittin the woods... he said LOOK!! and in the front yard of the cabin were two long beards... I eased out the back and went up the hill and got past em (the whole time he was textin me telling me where they were  @--0--0121 )  and when I got in front of them I called and they both cut me off, so I shut up and just a little bit here they come... I rolled the front turkey and the deal was done....  I spent 5 hours on the road that day and only hunted a total of about and hour and killed 2 gobblers.... gotta love those days... That following Monday a couple of us went back to Rocky Top and the goofball in my picture post in the turkey hunting section killed his.   Been a good season so far and have a hunt planned for tomorrow and hope they are screamin and do right once again...

Post by: [Blocked] on August 20, 2012, 03:45:38 PM
It's been a while since I been on this deal, so I thought I would change the name a little and start fresh since the season is right here upon us!
Been working my tail off getting ready for season....  I have been getting plots ready, farming as usual, and running cameras for weeks...  The farming part has been done, just waitin on mother nature to cooperate. One month she dehydrates us, then the next she floods us... oh well. Anything and everything is God given and I'll take it as a blessing.  Took inventory the other day and have just one shooter on camera, but he will be plenty enough. Split Brow tine eight point that I have given the name "Banana Split" probably gross in the 140's. That's the deer I have set my season on and will hunt him exclusively unless some other one shows up in rut.  The first part of the fall I'll be on the road heading to LBL on a homecoming hunt I was invited on and that seems like it's gonna be a hoot. Several TH members are getting to go on that hunt (Hunly, Bogo, myself, and would ya believe, the long lost Copperhead is going!) The week after that I'll be heading to North Dakota to hunt ducks and then the week I get back for that the season starts again in Alabama! I'm fired up about this year and hope to put a few good deer down, but I do know this, whether I do or not, I will enjoy the season. Oh yeah! My little boy was 7 months old yesterday... Time no longer stands still in my house. I hope to have a memorable season this year and I hope ya'll enjoy the stories and memories that will be made.

Well let me refresh the ole journal up since I'm back in action here.
September season in Kentucky was about as miserable as an experience as I've dealt with in the deer woods... I literally hunted in shorts and short sleeves the second day of the season... 95 AND HOT!!!! Well it hasn't gotten much better for me up there since then having seen one pipsqueak spike on stand in 5 days of hunting.... FF to Alabama
Alabama opening weekend was about as exciting a weekend as I've had in the stands in a long time. Seen a pile of deer over the weekend and hope to continue that this coming weekend if I don't go crappie fishing. Next week I'll be heading back to Kentucky for the so called "early rut" I'm skeptical to all that hooblah with predicting the rut so I will see for myself if they know what's up...

KETUCKY
9/6/15 - nothing
9/7/15 - spike jones
10/8/15 - zilch
10/9/15 - nada
10/11/15 - nothing

Alabama
10/17/2015- 7, all bucks. biggest was about 145 inch ten point. Headed to beans mainly with a couple scrubs going into whiteoak flat
10/18/2015 - 9 total, 3 bucks (all scrubs) 6 does and yearlings
10/19/2015 -  10 total, 6 does and yearlings, 4 bucks. biggest about 135/140 eight.  SMASHED
10/22/2015 -  3 total, all does and one boone and crockett trash panda

What's going on with Kentucky?  I'm sure the temps were still hot. I agree with Gutshot. Surely now that it's cooler they'll be moving getting ready for the rowdy season.

Update:
Spent first week of Kentucky gun season in Kentucky... typical with the way the season was going, it was slower than usual. Seen one big, giant 6 point first morning, first hour. Would have gladly taken him had he stopped and presented a shot.

Gun season Alabama. I hunted from day after Thanksgiving to yesterday (12/6) that's a whole lot of hunting!!! seen a pile of deer some running does, some not. Missed the biggest deer I've seen on our farm last Monday in the first 30 minutes of light... He was a little too far but I'm comfortable with those shots with my 300, but thing was, I didn't bring my 300 that morning for reasons only the deer gods know. Seen another good deer on Thursday morning, he had his head down and was in a hurry to get somewhere and couldn't get him to stop so that's that. I'm about tired, so Saturday I decided to go duck hunting at a new place we got. We were able to knock down 9 mallards and a gadwall. That was a pleasant change in scenery from a deer stand and will be doing that again.

Killed two coyotes and a bobcat. Seen two more coyotes and three bobcats that will die before season is over! Rut is kinda all over the place for the house, I speculate due in part because this crappy hot/cold/hot weather that's going on and it doesn't look any better. Two weeks from now we are suppose to get the first real cold weather. One can only hope!

End of the year update:  Hunted as much as I could from about 12/10 through now. The week before Christmas our deer hit and it got pretty wild for a few days. If you seen a doe, you seen a buck or more. One morning I had a doe come through and before I got down I had 6 different bucks come through on her trail. After the Christmas flood it got pretty sorry at the house cause 90% of the property was 8 inches deep or more in water. After the water subsided I started noticing the deer pounding the wheat but the rut being over, it was mainly does and small bucks. I haven't gotten pictures of a good deer in three weeks. It's over. On the upside, I did manage to drag down a decent 8 point on another property and finish out my season. I'm tagged out. Time to try to shoot some coyotes and bobcats, ducks, and maybe catch a crappie or two before the spring gets here and I go into hiding from March 15-May 10!!!!!!!!!!

Well well well!!! Let's load the carts and hook the wagons! ZLong's roadshow circus is coming back to town in t-minus 6 days! Let the countdown begin fellers! I will be in Kentucky for the opener, got my camo shorts and tank top ready for it cause it's gonna be warm, but ole sag belly may move a little since he hasn't been harassed in a few months. Ya'll sit back, enjoy the peanuts and drank and let the ringmaster bring you tales of the hunt. I'm sure you'll get both the good and the bad from me this season and I wish nothing but the best of luck to each and everyone of you! May your arrows fly straight, your blood trails be short, your cross hairs be steady. Have a great time in the outdoors, and remember... if given the opportunity, take someone hunting and PASS IT ON. Let's flat get it ladies and gentlemen!!!!!!!!

Update on the circus!
I've been to kentucky twice in the last month. I was able to carry one of my good friends up and he successful killed a baeutifuk 10 point with his bow.  Me on the other hand didn't have the heart to shoot a fawn the first morning or a mother the next morning with her fawn. Overall the weather was nice and I was glad someone was successful. This past weekend I was able to slide back up there and punched my buck tag for the season! Big 5.5 year old 8 point. I'm bringin my dad back up for gun season to see if he can kill one and I'm going to try to go Kill some turkeys during the fall season next weekend. Boy have I got bad news for the bucks at the house this year. Now that I'm tagged out in kentucky I can focus all my time on them!!! I can't wait to get in a tree this weekend in Alabama.  Just something about hunting at home on your own ground makes me realizes how lucky I am! Good luck everyone!

Well the circus is in full bore now at the house! I've been ate up with the obsession of trying to locate a new buck to kill. A few weeks ago I was able to take dad to Kentucky where he killed a real nice ten point the first hour of the first morning. He was some kind of fired up about it! Can't be any more tickled for the ole man! Well we left out of Kentucky not even 24 hours after arriving and went back home. I was planning on bowhunting the next morning but couldn't wake up to go like a lazy bum. Of course Spindly Nine was on cam at my stand at 8 that morning but the good Lord had other plans for me and that was on Monday the opener of muzzleloader I was to take the biggest buck we've killed on our family land! I go back to work and the next weekend rolls around which is rifle season for Alabama. Saturday wasn't much punkin on my end of the farm but Dad was covered slap up with deer. He didn't see any he wanted to shoot and just enjoyed em. The day two of the opener was a little bit better. I decided to shoot a doe that come out with 8 of her friends. Dad seen a few more deer but didn't kill anything. That afternoon I had to go to the outlaws for a little bit and got the text we all want to get when our dad is hunting. "I shot a big buck, can you come help me find it." Not only did I now have an excuse to leave the outlaws house,  but I also got to help dad find a good deer. I get there and he picks me up on the ziz wheel and off we go. We find blood and after tracking about 75 yards we found him! Spindly Nine!!!!!! So glad dad was able to get him. FF to this past weekend and we are back at it. It's the last day of the rifle antlerless season so dad shoots a doe, and then I'm covered up with deer and this monster bodied deer comes out, never seen him before but I know he's mature so I decide to shoot him. Not much for a rack but I'll bet a million he weighed over 225 lbs! Fully mature, just not all mature deer have big racks. Season is young and I've been blessed with three mature deer already this year, dad with two. We still have the rut coming in full bore and it's very close right now. I'm actually leaving work early today because of a couple of things I may have seen this morning that I need to take care of and I'll put it to you like this, the smallest one's number is gonna be around 135!!!!! Wish me luck! and good luck to everyone else this season! The circus is rolling!

Well its day whatever of hunting season.... we've been battling hot/cold/hot/cold and now back to hot weather... I'll be honest, this fat boy is tired tired tired! I've hunted hard and a lot since September 3,  and haven't slowed down much to do anything other than sleep. I've got one buck tag still left in my pocket but after the past month or so I haven't really seen anything I'd half think about shooting. Dad killed one more 8 point that wasn't a regular around the house dogging a doe a few weeks ago and that's been about the highlight of the month of December. I know I am seeing a lot of 1-3 year olds that I've never laid eyes on before so the next generation looks promising. I would be duck hunting by now, but problem is there are no ducks! I'm going to keep dredging on through and hope ole mossy head shows back up for the last few weeks of season and he's hungry! Hope everyone has had an outstanding year this year and I hope nothing but the best for you and your family in 2017!  Is it turkey season yet?!?!?!? Oh and the fish are about to start biting so I need to rest up and fill that other half of the freezer with the white meat!

Saw a little forkhorn this morning on my way to work, and our nice big 8 pointer one evening last week coming home, but those are the only two bucks I've seen in at least a month.

TEN DAYS LEFT!!! Which for the deer, my season is officially over... I didn't tag out this year, but I'm not complaining a bit! I was able to kill the biggest deer we've killed on our farm, killed a pope and young whitetail in Kentucky, watch dad take his best two bucks to date and fill the freezer once again. This season was a success! Good luck to everyone out there still hunting, but it's time for me to get the squirrels and rabbits, then fire up the boat and load the other half of the freezer with crappie and not too far in the future I can hear a turkey gobblin on a ridge! Truly was a blessed season!

Zlong congrats on a successful season.  Unfortunately I didn't get to hunt this year, my Dad had a stroke before the season and consistently went downhill until he passed away Jan 27th.  I am going hunting Friday and hopefully I will see a buck but if not I will spend the day remembering the hunts my Dad and I shared as I grew up.

Heflinsi, really sorry to hear about your Dad, but certainly encourage you to get into the woods if you can, that's always good therapy for me when things are difficult.  Take a breather and spend some time reflecting on things.
