have to wait until 4/18 to start but got 3 days off during the week to hunt so far.  finally drew the early season.  now scouting starts with the snow on yet to see if i can ascertain if they have a pattern to there travels after flying down from their roosts.  i know some of the tom's cross my drainage ditch and now's the time to find there crossing and put a natural blind up.

Turkey season opened this morning with cold temps and high wind and no gobbles.  I just hung out over my Imperial Clover plot, and about 10 o'clock I had two jakes come by.  I was just excited to see a turkey           @--0--0109

My Boss had the Birds talking Sunday Morning (Southeast of Troy Alabama) He hid and Quit calling when they got close...
I couldn't get a Bird to talk yesterday in Central Alabama but spotted 8 Hen's and 1 Jake yesterday...
Heavy Rain tonight has put a halt to my early morning before Work Hunt plan's...

Hunted Shelby County, AL (Central part of state) Tues thru Thurs this week. Cool mornings with low fog in valleys/hollers. Very little gobbling. Heard 2 Monday. Lite rain Tue morning - none. Wed morning - none. Thurs morning - none. I am in a club hunting 4000 acres. Several other members had same experience. Big boys gobbled once or twice and went to ground with hens. Very little action from younger gobblers. They would not respond to calls. One 2 yr old taken Wednesday afternoon.

I am sure that things will change this weekend. Temperature has warmed up at night and during the day. Unfortunately I am working this weekend.

Good luck to all those AL hunters this weekend.

Hunted Fayette County, Alabama(3/19/2011)
Heard seven different gobblers. Two got to ride back in the truck.
Only had two birds gobble on roost but the other five started firin up between 8:30am and 12 noon.
This just goes to show everyone out there who is just getting started that even though they don't gobble on roost that don't mean shut it down and go eat breakfast. Stay with it. The best time to fool ole Tom is midday in my opinion.

Good Luck to Everyone!!!

Looked at some new Hunting Land 4,000 Acres in Coosa Co Alabama while riding around with my Brother and Kubuta UTV Sunday afternoon 03/20/2011
we spotted 3 Turkeys on a field about 500 yards away My Brother had his Shotgun and I had a Stright Creek Slate and two Stickers with me...
We slipped down to the Plot edge and he was in full strut about 120 yards away something spooked them could have been my Brother's red Shirt
or my bare white legs I slipped be hind a log and started calling he would call back about 4 times then he was silent I spotted him about 60 yards
just could not close the deal...

They were gobbling like crazy this morning but shut up as soon as they hit the ground. That's very typical here because of the predators. I had 3 gobbling where I was. All three were off property. I tried to call one over to our side and if I could have stayed longer i think I might have done it but had to work this morning. Going this afternoon to see what I can stir up...

Went Turkey hunting Saturday and Sunday.  The whole crew was there: Cobb Guy, Split Toe, MossyDawg, Little Dawg & Bo Ballistice even made the long drive. Most everyone heard some some birds.   I had one gobbling w/in 100yds but could not close the deal.
The hero of our group was  "LittleDawg" he busted a big ole bird.  This ole tom had 1" spurs and 11" beard.  Way to go Little Dawg.

Our season opened last Saturday, but I've been working everyday. Finally had today off, but had things to do till noon, so thought I'd check out my Turkey honey hole. I parked at the gate around 4:00 and huffed it in for about 2 miles. The area is thick when you come into it and opens up into some nice mixed woods. I was on the edge of the thick stuff when I heard scratching in the leaves, loud............ I called a few times, but I could tell they were working away from me. I tried to make my way closer, but only got close enough to see one huge Turkey...................... Gobbler? Not sure, but there were several other turkey there still working away from me. I decided to ease back out and try to get in there in the mourning.................. Hope my luck is better then.............

out this morning and set up in one of my son's permanent deer shacks.  didn't hear a gobble one as snowing hard and wind about 15mph out of the ease, visibility at times down to 50 yards.  3 inches of snow this morning (had to clean off my deke twice from the snow sticking to her) in about 3 hours and then it let up and i had to go into work.  got friday off now and may even squeeze in a evening hunt yet.  maybe i'll track my tom down this year?

Went back to Winston County Saturday morning and boy was it not all that great.

Arrived and heard no gobbles... did see two hens but that was the highlight of our trip.
I threw everything but the kitchen sink at them and got no response.... I haven't got that beat up by turkeys since I started, so....in saying that, I'm
out to seek a little redemption this weekend.

Gobblers beware!!!!!

out today for 9 hours in the rain and wind, at least 5 different set ups and called in one coyote at first set up to within 15 yards and couldn't shoot as not season now.  saw one buck due to the pedicles i could see emerging on his head and not one turkey seen or heard.  two more days and then have to wait for fall.  out tomorrow as weather may get better than the first five days.   side note:  called the yote in with some hyper cutting, got a new call for yote hunting now.

BP,

we are closed from shooting them from mar. 15 thur aug 15 for whelping raising.  after that they are fair game again.  hunted today and got back about 12 noon.  again no birds seen, did hear one gobble finally this am but won't answer my calls as several hundred yards away.  i'm beginning to think we've suffered significant winter or predator kill this winter on the turkeys in my area.  just not seeing any on my place or on the 30 mile drive to and from my place like i usually do. can't hunt tomorrow as family obligations.  oh well, always have the fall season.

Season started here on April 18th, I did'nt get to go out until the 22nd, I woke up it was storming, waited until it quit and it was just starting to get daylight, so I ran out the door and about 400 yds out to a a knoll in the field, waited about 15 min. for things to settle down, heard nothing, called two times and a gobbler flew out of the woods about 200 yds in front of me, gobbled twice, saw my decoy and ran straight to it. Game over.He is probably a 3-4 yr. old bird, 1and 1/8 inch spurs, 10 inch beard, and weighed 27 lbs. can't wait till my next days off which will be the first few days in may. Sure hope this rain stays away

!st Hunt of the year...I wasn't lucky this a.m. the weather is not cooperating this year..and now its calling for 7 to 14 days of rain and cold (cool) weather...that is neither good for hunting or good for the turks nesting or having them becoming more active...no gobbles in the roost today..we set up before daylight and were only 40 yards from a Hen in the roost, unknown to us at the time, no gobblers with her...she was an adult Hen and it was just one of those days a cool sprinkle every once in a while..we heard gobbles late and I had Hens 20 feet to 30 yards from me but no gobbler following...my Straight Creek Calls (http://www.straightcreekcalls.com) are working awesome..brought in  at least 2 hens...the gobblers gobbling just not interested either in my call or the live hens around us....better luck tomorrow but I don't see our luck changing until this slump of bad weather passes...the news say were in one of those bad areas that are going to get one storm after another for up to 14 days,,,,maybe luck will change on the 15th...lots of birds around just weather problems @--0--0118

Another Hard day turk hunting in NY...rain,rain and more rain and cold...as I said before not good for the hunters or the turks...some areas of NY have better weather but here in Central NY its just plain flooded and bad...went out this morning...no gobbling in the roost or hens....saw 2 adult gobblers and my partner missed one...impatient didn't wait till he was close enough..but..it was a bushwhack job anyways...did not respond to calls or they also were both alone and with no hens...it was cold you could see your breath when calling......I saw more gobblers leaving the area in fields than in the woods...my partner went back after I had to leave early for a prior engagement.....well better luck next time...I dont plan on hunting till weather change...maybe saturday..if it changes before , I'll be out...Good  Luck to whoever is still hunting @--0--0118...thisd is the worst opener that I have seen in quite a few years >:(

Dave...can't afford the gas...Wow last time I filled up ...gas was 3.79 a gal.....4.05 yesterday @--0--0122...Have you noticed that the isles and shelves in the grocery stores are getting more spacious? They aren't even stocking nearly as much....

Any how good thing I called in that bird for him today...he just called and is on the off ramp of expressway...flat tire...need # to a nearby AAA garage...doesn't want to risk getting hit changing a tire...he was a hit and run victim years ago...so the whole day wasn't bad @--0--0137

Hunted this morning with my youngest son in tow. We called two jakes into 15 yards from us. He was loving every minute of it. I let them walk since eather one only had about 1 to 2 inch beard max. But I think he's hooked now.  @--0--0123

Well, their still not working good in my area of NY, but what a morning...they gobbled on the roost finally but havent roosted in their normal places all year., tomorrow change of tactics...I had a huge gobbler, 3 hens, and a adult gobbler and a jake in the field 70 yards but couldnt get them closer...no decoys set in field....worked them for a good hour....then watched a hen and jake but sorry BP didnt get close enough for a comfortable shot...tomorrow change of tactics and I can stay all morning...had to leave tghe hen and jake in the field because of a prior committment at 8:15AM....STARTED GOBBLING ON ROOST 5:25AM AND IN FIELD by 6:10 am....tomorrow I'm on the other side before daylight ;D

I hit the trail at 4:30 am and it was pretty light out already....got to the blind area and 100ft out snort snort snort... @--0--0122...Great ..then on the other side of me I hear a fly down away from me down hill....well ..not a good start ...so I decided just too be quiet......had a fox hunting mice and the birds woke...no turkey sounds at all and I looked at my watch ...it's now 7am....next thing I know ..I'm falling and awake with a start disoriented..... aaa yep the watch now says 8am...wonderful! wondering how many turkeys walked by I decided since I was in character I'd let loose with a ticked off hen call...not 2 seconds later she cut me off and the game was on....I could hear her just a running through the woods and mad as all get out...when I heard a loud snap and all went quiet.......so I stayed still...when I saw dark movement 150yrds out....It was a tom and he was not making a sound and stopping for long periods to survey the wood lot....so I did a few soft yelps and he came angling in on me ...I got the gun ready ..he was looking small to me so I held off and when he popped out from a lrg maple and jumped a log 30yrds out I saw he was a Jake...no spurs but to my surprise had a double beard...est. of 5-6in on the one and 3-4 on the other...he had his feathers all smoothed down and you could see he was just a yungin...but he won't be next year and that double beard should be looking right fine........he walked to with in 15 yards and around me....perhaps to smooth that hens ruffled feathers @--0--0137

This year so far has be mighty fine for me...I've called in birds every time out and all with in gun range...one more tag to fill ...I'm thinking of giving camp a try...need to go clean it anyways.....

I was in the blind by 4:30...so dark out I had to use a flash light covered with my hand...realized that now hearing a loud snap of a branch near me in the dark...with out a stomp or a snort or the sound of running away......stops my heart for a second now ##$%#12.....any how rain...rain ...rain ...the muffled sound of a cut off gobble and 3 shots not too far away...that was it for me this a.m.....not even a squirrel wanted to be out in the ran and fog that is rolling through....Funny just nasty and it got cold as well and today was the day I hear the most shots.....lol....Well I need a coffee and to warm up...Have a good day

Went this morning for a couple hours. Nothing gobbling, nothing making a peep anywhere. This rain we've had has messed them  up a little but would have thought they'd be out in full swing since it stopped for most of the day. Looks to be nice tomorrow so we'll give another whack at 'em!

Woke at 3:30 a.m. to the sound of rain....It stopped by 4am ...but ya know...I'm just tired of being cold wet...soaked...in general dank....There is a  ground fog hanging over the area and I'm happy to be drinking coffee and ...typing to you....perhaps tomorrow morning will be dryer...I'll give it another try @--0--0137

I've checked differant areas on the property and there is no sign of turkey any where and they went quiet a while ago...did find a small nest of tan eggs with brown speckles...bob white or grouse??

went out this morning...was a little misty but not 1/3 of what we have been living with...ground fog though...had a jake and 3 hens in the lot gobbling to me using my orange, green and black mouth calls from Straight Creek Calls (http://www.straightcreekcalls.com) they are working good if I can get a hen to nest or leave the gobblers...they gobble a lot to them but won't leave the ladies right there in front of them...had a big one gobbling to my calls behind me...but if that jake, in the field, had 3 hens...the big boy must have had em too...he gobbled good to my mouth calls but stayed in the woods...well, I'm still hoping for weather to break and get the hens to leave the gobblers and not be with them right off the bat in the A.M..... @--0--0118, I'll try again this week

I am sitting in a turkey blind in Redwing, MN right now in the rain.
I am here for six days of hunting.
Not much going on but some water dripping on my head.
Can't golf in this stuff and you never know what might wander by.
Weather looks like it will change.
I hope so.
Wish me luck!

Stick a fork in me, I'm done. Went this morning and heard and saw absolutely nothing. Our season ends May 24th and I don't see on the schedule where I can get back out before it's over. It was a good time though and I got to have my youngest with me several times so it was well worth it. We'll just have to get 'em next year!

well, finally got to go out without it pouring or cold...we had a bunch of thunderstorms go thru last night and when 3:30 am came about it quit...I and my son got on our trogs and went out....the storms probably kept them silent off the roost but we saw at least 5 or 6 gobblers, 8 -10 hens...I called and called but they just wouldnt leave those ladies...I got one more chance tomorrow and I am changing tactics again and setting up where we have seen them come thru every time that we have been there.....wish me luck...one good thing is that I saw the big boy and if I get a crack at him....the contest will be mine ;D

my Michigan season started last monday.  So far, it's been kinda dismal.  Rain on monday.  windy on tuesday.  had a tom gobbling on the roost, about 100 yds away, maybe closer, but when it pitched down, it shut up and walked away.  Skipped wednesday.  nothing gobbling on the roost on thursday, so I tried blind calling.  Zip.  Went this morning, and the only gobbling I heard sounded like it was a mile away, well outside of the property I was hunting.  Tried some more blind calling.  another zero.  One thing that struck me kind of funny.  In all the walking I did, I only saw one turkey track, but I saw relatively fresh coyote tracks in five different spots!  The farmer told me he had had  problems with coyotes earlier this year when his cows were calving, and lost one calf to the coyotes.
