Title: ARE YOU UPGRADING.....
Post by: [Blocked] on January 12, 2011, 09:52:32 AM
Now that the season is over or winding down, what upgrades or changes do you plan for your archery tackle this off season. Just curious as to how others approach the off season, are you happy with what you have, want to tweak a little or make huge changes? Why?

Me, I'm going to switch out my QAD Ultra Pro LD rest with a Ripcord Code Red ( the QAD doesn't fit my bow properly) and update my binos with a pair of Carson Optics TD-042 high definition binos. (my Nikon Travel Lite binos are pretty beat up and about 10 years old)

my gear is functional and works well for me.  am going to spend more time on my total gym to keep the bow muscles in shape throughout the year to avoid having to buy a crossbow as i age.

Thinking about a new site, haven't made up my mind yet.  I changed a lot last year, and changed some things after the sight, so I need to shoot it a little more to make up my mind.

The way New York State is going I will spend my off season trying to secure a place to archery hunt. Every year it gets more difficult to access property to hunt. Soon, if you do not own or lease some ground in NY State, trying to hunt here will almost be impossible. I think it is getting that way in many states. Combination of the tree huggers that post their lands, hunters that post their land, land that is leased by guides and other hunters, non-hunters that deny access, and the ever increasing use of "nuisance" permits by our DEC, the future looks bleak.

I'll be upgrading everything.  I'll be going from nothing to a new bow with all new accessories (I haven't owned a bow in years, and haven't shot in even longer).

i won a peep eliminator this summer. i really like it. it did take me a month to get use to it, so plan accordingly. the site adjustments are much smaller than w/ a peep site. i am using 1 pin every 20 yards instead of every 10 yards because i can't get the pins tight enough. it's sure nice in low light.

I had a complete Bow make over this past October with the purchase of my New Breed Archery Nemesis Bow..
The only thing I will be adding is a nice Bow case...
Any recommendations on a awesome Bow case?

Archery season over? Heck no- it's just starting. :) 3-D season is here and that is the best way for hunters to stay on top of their physical shape and ready for the next season. :)

With that being said, I will keep my BowTech Destroyer 350 with my QAD rest, Carbon Express Maximas and Grim Reapers for hunting (as of right now). I'm going to add a BowTech Specialist to my stable of bows as well as a BowTech Heartbreaker. You can't ever have too many bows. :) I'm going to keep my Sword Acu Site pin sight for hunting and my CBE with Sword scope for 3-D and my Trophy Taker Spring Steel. I am going to try the new Carbon Express CXL Pro shafts.

@ZLong19- the Easton Lightspeeds are awesome arrows! If I ever left Carbon Express, that's where I'd go for sure. They are great all around arrows.

If you like wrist releases, Carter makes one called the Quickie that is awesome. You might want to check it out. Those are really good folks!

Gonna add a Peep Eliminator.   Found myself in some awkward positions trying to get shots this year and I think it will help.

I don't plan on changing anything at all.  My Drenalin is still rocking strong.  I'm affraid to change anything.  It's all tuned perfectly and I can actually shoot it well.  It's probably getting about time for a new string but that would be all I change.

The only thing I plan to do is get into 3D shooting.  I met some fellow hunters this year that have their own private 3d range not far from where I live.  They invited me to come out and shoot anytime.  I won't abuse the invitation though.  It sounds like they have a lot of money and time put into their range.  I'm thinking I'll donate a 3D target or two to their range to show them I'm not a free loader.  Hopefully that will do and I'll have a cool place for me and my son to practice.

Well I am upgrading my entire setup.  I shot a bunch of bows this fall and then shot the Matrix Plus.  WOW.  I have one on order and should have it early next week.  The Element is pretty great too but I wanted the longer ATA.  There are a lot of great bows but that Carbon riser is just an amazing leap forward.  I will be fitting it with the QAD Ultra rest, Spot-Hogg Hogg-It sight, Hoyt quiver and will be looking at stabilizers once it is in.

Aside for the bow upgrade I also just purchased a Little Jon String Jig and will be building all my own strings from here on out.  Just getting started with that now but it should be a lot of fun.

If you have the room your own range is a great idea. My buddy and I went halves on about 10 targets from R and W targets about 10 years ago, look them up on line, Russell is a great guy, great prices.  3D is quickly addicting so be prepared. We got into before we had kids and we were traveling every weekend to shoot a new course, met great people and improved tremendously. My son is 5 and he loves our range, so do my friends, spread out over the 6 wooded acres I have. About 15 targets, 2 shots at each, 2 ladder stands, well worth the money. Have fun!!

The lure of a new bow is so enticing. But if yours ain't broke, well, you know what I mean.

But I hear you. Been drooling over the Bowtech Insanity Cpxl.

Not planning on it ...
I have far to much money invested in my New Breed Archery Nemesis Bow
which happens to be the only one I can draw back without having to Sky draw back.
But you never know what two weeks may bring for my Birthday...

i have decided to buy a new bow.ELITE HUNTER. READ GOOD THINGS SO I WENT AND TRIED IT AT THE LOCAL RANGE.#60 at 281/2 draw was nothing, guy said to let the bow go slowly and when i started to let it creep it wouldn't go.it was almost like i have to shove the string forward to let off on it.very smooth and less time at peak draw wieght.it's a tad pricey but it's smooth and draws easier the my ross cardiac.check it out  elite archery  rochester ny.    local company

Went and shot the Mathews ZXT, Chill, and the Monster today, I went thinking I wanted the ZXT, it shot really good, smooth feeling bow, very nice. But the instant I grabbed a hold of the Chill I was in love, shot it several times, and just couldn't get enough of it, so needless to say I put money down on it and they got me one coming.

I've had to set out the last 2 seasons. So a new bow and all the works are in store for me. Shot the HeliM last year and really liked it. Gonna try to see if my shop still has one in stock for me, but not rule out the Creed or the Chill just yet. Either way come monday I'll have a new Mathews in my aresnal.

My Z7 has 2 seasons on it now,  I might restring it if need be, got the RetinaLock IQ sight late in the season, so I have alot of shooting to do as I didnt get to sight it in over 20 yards, and need to build a couple permanent stands, also have plans to build a haybale blind this spring so it is all ready for September.

I won't be upgrading anything this year as I spent a lot the last few years on my bows.  You can see what I have in my signature.  This year my wife and I have gotten into handguns and we are having a lot of fun with that.  I used to think archery was expensive but once you get going with the guns that ammo cost really racks up.  That and range time in the winter.

Just just dropped my Hoyt LazerTech at my Pro Shop. I hope I will have a job by the time he is done. He's changing strings, maybe cams, putting in an UltraQuad rest.

Once ready, he checks that I can be dead on by shooting the updated rig in his shop.

If the bill comes in before I get a job, you are all invited to my funeral. I know my wife will kill me  --7-8-9
