Title: What's the best in your opinion?
Post by: [Blocked] on November 24, 2009, 09:52:04 PM
Thinking about buying a new deer rifle. What do you all think is the best bang for the buck. Been thinking about something in the 270 or 308 range. Just curious what you think. Thanks in advance!

Man there are a lot of guns that will be good for deer hunting. You will get a lot of different opinions on this subject. And you have already said it anything in the .270 to 308 range. But give some thought to the .260, 25-06. I guess it will come down to the type of rifle or manufactor you want say like Remington, Tika, Winchester, Savage, etc, etc. Good luck on your choice....

I'm assuming you want to use the rifle to hunt deer, as that is the most common big game animal.  Either cartridge would be fine.  I think there is a wide variety of factory loads available, if you want to pay the price.  If you reload, well, there are endless possibilities.  I tend to favor the .30 calibers, but there are others equally effective.  Recently, I have read a little bit about "small for the caliber" bullets, driven at higher than normal speeds, on big game.  They seem to be pretty effective.

I agree with Red.  If given a choice of .270 or .308, I'd definitely choose the .308.   Personally, I hunt with a Browning A-bolt .300 WSM.  Take my advice, though, and I'm going to open a can of worms here but, whatever you choose, I'd opt for a Savage rifle if you can't afford a Browning.

Pretty tough to argue against going with a 30-06, you'll be able to find ammo just about everywhere, and it'll kill em dead.

Well Said. 30-06 shells can be found in any mom and pop store. Something to keep in mind if you will be hunting different states and find out your shells are home on the kitchen counter. It's a very versatile gun.

I own a Ruger M77 270 and Love it...
But I guess my next one would be a Ruger M77 30-06 just because Ammo is not going to be in short supply for that Caliber...

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. I'm going Friday to see what the local gun store has. I got to thinking about the ammo situation and leaning toward a 30-06 now. I really appreciate all the useful information. Thanks again and safe hunting to all.

I'm partial to the Weatherby Mark V in 30-06, it has the shortest bolt throw on the market and it'll spoil you, its HARD for me to pick up anything else these days to hunt with

When I got back into hunting and had a son that wanted to hunt too, I bought a 270 Savage because it was the least expensive gun I could find and at the time I needed all the gear.  I have more expensive rifles now but I prefer that synthetic stock 2370 Savage....it shoots great, I love the trigger feel, and has never failed me.

I have a 308 and 30-06 like them both  I am a Remington man I would go with one in the 500 to 800 $ range the 308 has more factory loads then the 270 the 30-06 has the most of all calibers. pick a common caliber so you can pick up ammo anywere

Hey guys thanks for all the replys. I'm pretty sure on the 30-06 now,  because of the ammo. I've been to alot of little country stores and other places and if they only have one caliber of ammo it will be the 30-06. Thanks again for all the replys and helpful information.

I just put the hammer down on a little basket-racked 7-point with my 30-06, and it dropped him like a bad habit. 30-06 with Winchester Ballistic Tips has been deadly for me, no deer I've shot with that combo has made ot more than about 40 yards.

This is a question I get all the time from potential clients. We have all read articles and stories about what caliber is best from author’s like Peter Capstick, Larry Weishuhn, Chuck Hand, Steve Johnson and so on...All of them agree that most importantly you must have the ability to hit what you are aiming at in the most stressful of situations…repeatedly.

My answer usually goes like this...It depends entirely upon the type of game you are going to hunt, the range you will be hunting and if you are going to spot and stalk or hunt from a blind. You need to be sure the caliber you pick is going to offer bullet capable of doing what you want to do. For example if you are going to be shooting power line right of ways you do not want your daddy's 30/30.

I choose the .308 because you have such a variety of bullet weights and types that you can suit it to just abot any application you can possibly imagine. As far as a rifel this depends on what your check book will handle. I love Browning, Ruger, Savage, Tika and Howa. These are all quality firearms capable of performing better than I can. I have owned/or own one of each and have no complaints about any of them. The best bang for your buck in my opinion would be the Savage or Howa. Carried the Savage 110 as a police sniper and have hunnted with my Howa 1500 for the last 2 years quite successfully. Hope this helps...

The 30-06 is the best all around caliber, IMO!

I love my .270. It a good all around gun, it aint to big and it aint to small. You can harvest just about any game with it and can get some major distance out of it. I have a Remington .270 and I have carried it on a few youth hunts to let them use it and they love it. It is very forgiving so if you have a hunter new at the sport a little flinch aint gonna be off to bad.
